Title: Common engine issues for Southern California folks
Post by Jrhs1979 on 07/01/12 at 18:40:58

Hi,
I would appreciate help from anyone who feels they can, but I live in Southern California and I have a specific question for locals.

I'm new to the board as I purchased an '09 Suzuki S40 on April 1st.  I love the bike, but I was recently filling up with gas and another rider said he had an S40 as well and that there is a common engine issue and that I should go to some guy in the valley who can replace the part for $50.

Does anyone know what the issue is: Raptor petcock replacement? And if so is anyone familiar with who the guy is that replaces the parts?  He's supposedly in West Hills area or something.

Thank you for any help.

He was probably talking about the cam chain tensioner issue. Very common on that bike.

isn't an issue with cal bikes alone, everyone gots one.

what mileage?

keep your ears open for a tapping on the right side cover, just behind the oil filter and on top.

$50.00? Pretty cheap fix for a cam chain issue.

For sure...
I'd charge more than that,... and I work for .27 cents an hour... :-?...

I bet it's for a Raptor... DIY for $30 and ten minutes work... (hardly even work)...
Two screws and a condom...
(Hmm... reverse that)... :-?...

Two screws and a condom?... Perhaps I should clarify... :-/...
You will have to remove two screws and block the vacuum tap with a rubber sheath...  to install a Raptor...

... it's really easy...
... it's like riding a bicycle...
... easy as toast... :-?...

The guy told me it's an issue at around 3k miles, but I'm at 3.5k now and it's okay so far.  I appreciate all the ideas.  He told me if I came to this forum I'd read all about it and about the guy in SoCal that does the fix for you, but it seems like mostly everyone is able to fix these issues on their own.

I rent and don't have tool space so not sure I have the equipment to fix some issues on my own.

I'm not experiencing any issue now, but I wanted to be prepared.  However, you know the saying, "if it ain't broke."  Thank you for any ideas.

I could stash the tools for the bike in a smallish tackle box. Add to that a Harbor Freight tiny compressor & a 1/2" impact & youd be jammin,,
If you dont have too many stairs & a 36" door, itll go in the house,dude.. Some plywood on the floor & shazzam, mini garage,,
