Title: Starter problem on '87
Post by prechermike on 06/29/12 at 03:26:54

I am trying to sell my '87.  Been riding it out to the road every morning, putting it up at night.

Last night the starter would spin, but the engine would not turn over.  It sounded kind of like something was not aligned just right yesterday morning, when I started it.  Don't recall a busting sound when I turned it off.  Do you think it might be the starter gear busting thing I keep reading about.  I have not taken the bike apart, have no desire to, since I got another.

Did my bike for sale just become a parts bike?  :-/

Others here know the routine by heart, I dont, I just dont remember it being such a huge deal as to render a daily rider to the parts department,

couple inspections, I'd pull the starter and check it the gears will spin.
and you can check the mounting at the same time.  Look at the hole the starter fits in... big crack?  hope not.

I suspect you got a busted starter clutch.
can be fixed, takes a new clutch and a special too to get at it.

And if the gears spin (both directions, it's supposed to be a one way clutch), put it in 4th and back it up to spin the engine.  This will turn the clutch and maybe you'll find a spot with teeth.

Other possibility is the starter clutch is gone.  but same repair.

Test the starter out of the bike, to make sure it is spinning.
And remove the left cover, to check the starter gears and the starter clutch, that is supposed to lock in one direction and spin the other way

(mine was stuck both ways) so I went through this a couple of months ago!

OK, I finally got a few hours (You don't want to hear me complain about what is going on) and pulled the cover off the left side.

The pin (part #2) is broken and the gear (part #1) has most of the teeth on the smaller section broken off.

These parts are $70+ from ron ayers and bike bandit.  That is alot of money for a bike I am going to sell. (OK, whining is over)  I guess I need to bite the bullet.  Unless someone has some suggestions.

I think I will post in the market place and see if someone has a motor apart and will sell those parts to me as well.

Any other ideas?

On closer inspection the left side cover is also busted, where the pin should go into the case, the hollow nub is broken.  I am guessing that is even more not good.

Now, its all down to Mun KNee.. & your time.. How much can ya sell it for if ya fix it? How much as a parts bike? How much if you break it out & sell the parts?
Pencil & paper time,,

I have parts coming (thanks teabowl).  Do I need a new gasket or can I use some of the form a gasket stuff?  Any suggestions?

I suppose you could, it's a difficult one to get right.  I've heard a few had leaks even with the oem gasket.

BTW, there's a $8 gasket shipped available on bay of fleas.
