Title: '86 project: Cafe Au Lait?
Post by splash07 on 06/27/12 at 20:56:52

Picked up this little gem today for $200 and I am beside myself with excitement. Guy was asking 400 but I got him down to 200 because I have to wait a week to get the title and it has been sitting outside next to a salt marsh for a while. Its got 14,097 miles and most of the original parts. It is missing the battery box cover and both frame covers. I am guessing the last owner took em off to work on the thing and never put em back on.

Edit: just checked the frame for the VIN and noticed a manufature date of 4/'86. Guy I got it from said it was an '87. Guess it qualifies as an antique.

Here is how I found it.

The only problem is I am not even done with my current project, a 2000 savage. Here is a little sneak peak at Bonnie Blue, coming soon to a forum near you.

Please tell me what handlebars you have on bonnie blue! Those are awesome.

Bonnie is sporting a set of clubman handlebars from fleabay, I forget what the pull back is but it is something like 3"-4". I guess I should refer to it as pull forward   ;D

Love those fork gaiters on Bonnie Blue !!!!!

Good score on the '87. Even without the tittle I'd give two bills ! Worth way more than that in spares !!!!

Will be taking off many parts that I am not planning on keeping over the next few months so if you need something let me know or keep an eye on the market place.

Shame it does not have a luggage rack Splash. That's what I need right now.

Wish I could help you out there ZAR, only got saddlebags brackets and I am planning on keeping those.

Little update here: Previous owner just called and said he found the title and I am going to pick it up tomorrow. Wooohooooo!!  :D

Well, I have been thinking about it a lot since yesterday and I am still not sure of the direction I want to take this bike. I like the idea of a full blown cafe racer but I don't want to spend a ton of money on a RYCA CS-1 kit. Or a bobber which would be pretty simple. I just dont know. Help?

You're already missing some of the shiny bits. May as well bob that sucker!

I sent you a pm about the luggage brackets, if you're keeping them you can disregard it though.

First things first, I would get it up and running before deciding what to do with it.  :)

Once you get it running, if it were mine, I would probably drop the coin for a Voodoo frame and go that route, unless RYCA gets their hardtail kit up and available, where you can buy just the hardtail, or maybe the whole bobber kit?

So, get it running then decide.  ;D

(updated with a pic of the completed RYCA bobber  :o)

Yep, first step,, get it running, sure wouldnt wanna do a lot of work & learn the engine or the electricals suck.

come to think of it, you said that it had been sitting next to a salt marsh. If that has similar effects as the Pacific Ocean then I'd seriously think about gutting the electrical as a first order of business.

Great advice guys. yes it has been next to a salt marsh for what I can only guess is a couple of years. The PO did say that it ran before he parked it. There is about a gallon of really old gas in it too. It will need a new battery before I can attempt anything.

Oh yeah, Im already itchin to get in there and tear it apart but alas, I have another savage to complete first. As soon as Bonnie is all buttoned up. I am tearing into this '86.

I thibk they should offer as an option a set of forward controls with that bob kit. Hell, the engineering is already done, just punch it into the mill and stand back.

Change the oil before you even turn the poor thing over.
Ohh, & drain the bowl on the carb, then pull it & look at the jets, wipe the crud out of the bowl, youll save yourself some trouble,,

Trike it.

We've seen bobbers, choppers, cafe racers, touring versions, scramblers...

If I had two S40s, some cash for parts and some time to work on them, I will have a home made bobber and a home made trike.

But that's me!

Well after thinking long and hard about my problem I have decided to go with the cafe racer. I am not doing the RYCA kit, however. I am going to skip the RYCA kit because it is no longer unique, not to say its still not cool as hell and not to say I wouldn't build one if I had the money, but I don't have the money so a custom bike it will be.

The RYCAs are becoming pretty popular and I am almost certain I can build something comparable for a fraction of the cost. I do plan on using some of their parts such as the rear sets, tach and speedo, decomp mech., and clip ons. The rest will be salvage yard parts and fabricated.

I thought about the trike, but I have never really had a desire to own one, and the savage is just too much fun to make lame, there I said it.

No way!!! this thing is getting a full on face lift, there is no greater joy than opening a box of brand new motorcycle parts to put on your latest project. Like christmas all year long.

Yeah I am going to have to agree, a little miata in the mountains sounds like a blast. Ask Mick he seems to love his.

Speaking of Mick anyone seen or heard from him in a while?
