Title: Well, I got that out of the way...
Post by damiancds on 06/27/12 at 15:15:54

Backstory-
Okay, so going into work this morning, and long story short, I had my first accident. Some minor/cosmetic damage to the bike, and I walk away sore and with some hurt pride. The bike runs - I drove it the mile and a half home. I've decided not to dwell on what I could have done, as hindsight is 20/20 and there's about a dozen things I could have done differently, so I'm not going to over-analyze this to death. I reacted incorrectly and I'm learning from it (Pretty sure I over applied both brakes).

Question
Okay, So the only thing I'm not sure if it's only cosmetic is the master brake cylinder (pic included). If that's ground down on the corner, is it a problem?

I ask because I want it to function properly/ and I have an inspection that's due soon.

Will any Minor scrapes/ bent foot peg/ ground cylinder fail my inspection?

Looks kind of deep, have you seen any fluid leaking?

The important thing is you survived without serious injury.  That being said, will you be focused on the master cylinder, wondering "if" it's functioning properly?  If it were me, I'd replace it, but I'm a bit anal when it comes to things like tires, brakes and other safety equipment.

Hard to tell, but just eyeballing it I would guess it'll function fine.  That cap does not have to hold pressure but it DOES need to make an airtight seal or else humidity will get in there and eventually foul your brake fluid. Take the cap off (careful not to strip the screw heads) and there'll be a rubber piece under it.  Make sure the rubber didn't get nicked and still meshes with the cap and reservoir just the same.

I agree with the others. The master cylinder is probably fine. Check the rubber thing. If you have any doubt, replace it. Even if it is for your own peace of mind. My bike passed with bent pegs and brake lever. I am in PA though.

I am glad you aren't seriously hurt. Anything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Or so they say. Just be sure to learn from it.

Glad to hear your o.k.

As far as the master cylinder,  as long as it didn't mess up the seal you should be o.k.

As long as it doesn't leak fluid it will be fine. Take a file to it & smooth it down, then follow up with some sand paper. Maybe round over the cover edges & you might be suprised how good it can look. I've salvaged lots of parts over the years with files, sand paper & a little paint. 8-)

Myself I wouldn't take it apart as long as the brakes work good and no leaking.

Same here, I follow "if it is not broken, don't fix it"

Agreed!  As long as it still seals properly.

Glad you escaped reletively unhurt and able to learn from it damiancds, looks like it was a decent road grinding from the custom work on the master brake cylinder  :o

Mistakes happen... At least you are (mostly) unhurt and the bike has minimal damage.

I'd probably replace the MC, even if it still works. Would make for a good story though, perhaps? ;)

What are you replacing it with or are you just using the awesome drum in the rear?   :o

Yea, I saw that,, but hey,,its cool, right? In fact, I think Ill just go out & disable the front brakes on the car, never mind that thats where the majjority of the stopping power comes from..who needs to stop fast anyway?
