Title: New to this
Post by xFORBESx on 06/26/12 at 14:29:01

Hey everyone,

i just picked up a savage for a great price of free, and it has some issues that maybe this community can help me with.

1) after riding the bike for about 10 miles, and stopping to park it, the idle seem's higher than at startup, and 2 seconds after shutting it off, i get a big back fire. any thoughts on this?

2)when cruising in 4th gear, sometimes i like to " get on it" but it almost seems like it revs through the roof, but dosnt accelerate as it should. thoughts on this? iv had another guy tell me his intruder 1400 does the same

Someone put the wrong oil in it,,dump it, slap some rotella 15/40 in it & run it a 100 miles, dump it, refill it & have fun,

YOur carb needs tuned, no big deal, have fun, & read stuff here & get ready to go thru the carb, no hurry,

May have a leak in the exhaust, too,,

What year model is it?
How many miles?

Yes, check your clutch adjustment too, should have an 1/8" gap with the slop pulled out of the cable.

CONGRATZ!!!!!
thats a great score..

1) backfire is "afterfire" a small phffffttt is rather normal. large one indicates carb needs tuning. Also tighten ( just a bit) the header bolts

2) as said wrong oil... cluth plates are slipping. Someone put car oil in the bike. Use BIKE oil or Rotella

I digg that paint!

Yea... the paint was custom done by the previous owner 6months before he gave it to me... I'm not sure how much I want to tourqe the head due to a hairline crack on the jug. Would this cause these issues by chance?

For a 24 year old bike, it looks GREAT!  If you want to sell it for the same price you paid, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. ;D ;D

Nice deal on the bike, looks like it is in nice condition. But, as for stock, the paint, air filter, handlebars and mirrors are not stock. And the throttle cable is usually run under the tank. But that is all minor crap, bike looks great for the year.

Thanks for that information... shows how much I truely know about these bikes. I do believe the throttle cable needs re-routed, on hard right turns it pulls the throttle open about a 1\4 turn. Because it hits the side of the tank.

Thanx

As far as I know there are no weights in the grips.

Nobody addressed this issue in this thread.

In general, idle speed will be a bit higher on a warm, unchoked engine than it is on a cold, unchoked engine.  Short story....what you're describing sounds perfectly normal.

IHTH!
