Title: New carb install need little HelP PLZ
Post by suzukis on 06/21/12 at 10:55:20

my dad has 87 savage I was trying to remove the cap to adjust the lean on the carb when it got stripped. I couldnt repair it so I bought a Brand new carb Mikuni VM36SC. when i got the carb it fits and all but my throttle cable wont fit in the suction thing on the top of the carb? Do I need change my throttle cable or did I get the wrong carb? Ps on my carb my throttle cable was attached on the side like any other. but on this new carb it goes from the top of the carb through a hole down into a suctiondevice or something I can post pix if needed. I would like to get his bike running by tomm nite.
Cheers

I don't see that happening...

If you're not a carb guy,... changing to a different carb is going to be much more difficult that just replacing with a stock one...

Yes,.. you will probably need to get a new cable...
.. but,.. consider trading that carb in for a stocker if you want to get running quick and easy...

best luck... ;)...

PS... you'll get better help, if you post mechanical questions in the Rubberside section...

Couldn't you get a carb just like the stock one just one size bigger.

I have cables & yes it does require a custom throttle cable made for your model year,  extra jets, rubber flange, etc, to make it work for you.

Next week I am gone to the mountains for intensive dive bombing practice on the curvy roads.   :D

PM me today and let's see if we can get you going in a few days.
If you have a problem with the PM then email savage.s40@gmail.com

the VM series carb uses a different cable than the stock carb does.

As far as I know, no one makes a standard cable that works with our stock grips and a VM carb; you have to have them custom made.

I bought mine through barnett clutches (they do custom cables) and it ended up being about $50 or so.

LANCER has a post on the forum somewhere about good places to start getting on the VM carbs, and I have a post about tuning my VM38 in the cafe section too.

Also, the "suction thingy" you're talking about doesn't have anything to do with suction. Look up a VM tuning manual and you'll get a picture of how the carb breaks down. The proper throttle cable has a much smaller end on it that slides down through the top cap, through the middle of the spring, through the retaining plate, and finally through the bottom of the slide, which is where it seats.

On the realistic side of things, it is probably going to be two weeks before barnett can get you a cable and (depending on how much time you have and how often you ride) a good long while after that to get the new carb tuned properly. VM's are much less tolerant of elevation and climate changes than CV carbs are.

In Lancer's first post,  the one where he typed in BLUE he put his email address in there.  You can use that to contact him bypassing the forum board altogether.

The new VM36 carb you just bought is not jetted for a LS650 engine; it is jetted way too rich for this engine and needs to be rejetted for it to work.

The people here are gonna tell you what you need to do, the easiest, simplest, cheapest solutions are what you will get. If you could just turn a screw & get it, thats what he would have told you, He said, You Need to Rejet, &, when I was a complete carb newb, I knew that when someone here said that, thats what I was gonna hafta do,
Hang in there, ya bit off a bit much, but, youll get it chewed here in a while,, just be patient, take it one step at a time.
You dont even know what youre learning yet,in a month, after youre riding again & reading posts on carbs, youll start understanding them a lot better & this "event" is gonna shove you down that road.
