Title: Those Crappy Turn Signal Blinkers
Post by Starlifter on 06/20/12 at 20:23:30

So there I was today stopped at a red light, about 15 cars behind me as I wait for the light to change...

I glance down, and there is the amber lens cap from the right turn signal laying in the street...sh1t...

As I start to get off the bike to retrieve it, the light changes to green. I figure if I don't pick up the lens right now, it will be run over and smashed to pieces. (No doubt a replacement lens would cost a half a hundred bucks from the dealer).

Now I'm scooping up the lens cap as cars blow their horns, swerve around me, and pull up to about one inch from my rear tire..

I retrieve the lens, and the light goes red again, and it's about 95 degrees out, and everyone is upset with me.

I pull over to the side and I try to screw the damm lens cap back on...it won't go. I look at the thing and there are no threads....I try to snap it into place, and it falls to the ground again. *#@*+@!!

I break out my electrical tape, tape it in place, and ride home.

It looks like the thing was just glued to the housing with some kind of cheap plastic model cement...so I glue back in place...

Question is, how would one change the bulb in the thing? Pry it open breaking the glue seal?? It looks like the whole assembly could crack like an egg and be ruined. WTF?

Anyone know of some decent quality replacement lights that could be affixed to the bike without a whole lot of modifications?

Any advice would be appreciated.

older models had 2 screws thru the lens
my 06 has a set screw in the bottom of the housing bout half way back
never had them apart but looks like the reflector comes out at the same time..hope this helps

Order a set of Bikemaster front turn signals. Any bike shop with a WPS catalog can get them. Or get a set of older OEM ones from Bike Bandit. Either is equally durable/crappy (depends on your viewpoint). I think my stock 98 ones, though ugly as sin, are pretty durable, the front left survived a 35 mph layover (stepson wiped out in the rain) with a few scratches/gouges. Replaced the bucket with a stock rear bucket, substituted the guts from the damaged front one.

Perfect opportunity to upgrade to some nice aftermarket ones, just replace the cheap screw with a stainless one. If you don't, you'll never get the thing open... >:(

Most probably it's one of those "snap in, pry out" lens caps.

If the little retaigning tooth breaks off, the only two options are to glue the lens into place, or to slice an old inner tube and make two makeshift rubber bands

8-)

IIRC, the lens is glued onto an inner housing that does a little half-turn/twist into the plastic/chrome outer housing.... maybe?

Yea, theres a screw that holds the whole Innerworkings in.,& it takes a little twist to get it out after the screw is out.

Hm, my '06 did the same thing while I was washing it. :)

There's a set screw in the bottom of the light.  Once you take it out, you have to turn the little reflector thingie to get it to come loose.  I glued mine with super glue and it appears to be holding.  It is part 11-12 here http://www.bikebandit.com/2006-suzuki-boulevard-s40-ls650-turn-signal-lamp/o/m147605sch511153 and BikeBandit wants $26 for it.

The quality goes in before the name falls off.

Well thanks guys, I never thought there might be a screw down under... Anyway I think it's time I look into a more quality set of signals for the front, and rear also.

I wonder if you buy a $20.000 Harley or it's equivalent, you get stock quality metal signals?
