Title: Upcoming road test
Post by damiancds on 06/18/12 at 15:49:04

I've got my road test in 3 days, and I've got a few questions.

When doing your circles and figure eights, do you have to signal (either with hand or your bikes signals)?

If the figure eights and circles are in a parking lot, do you have to look over your shoulder?

It has been way too long for me to remember. I would guess to say yes to both questions. The test should simulate real road conditions. Having said that, in PA the rider's safety course has the test at the end and you do it just as they taught you.

That's weird. I took mine over 10 years ago and it was the last part of the course. My buddy took his last year. Same thing.

I can't speak to what's done in other locales or even what's current but I took a BRC in TX in 2003 or 2004 and signaling in the figure-eight was not required.  They were testing your control in slow/tight turns.

whoops, i was unclear!

i meant to say "turn signals not required for circles and figure 8 part of the test"

the test WAS included at the end of the (very worthwhile) safety course.  ( Check out some statistics on crashes of riders who did take the course versus riders who did not.  )

As far as "looking over your shoulder", do you mean as in checking for traffic?   no, not required.  As S.R. pointed out, that part of the test is testing your control at low speed

Looking over your shoulder in the figure eights is what makes it easiest for the bike to follow.  That's how they taught us.  The bike tends to go where your eyes go, so when you start into the curve of the 8, and you make the sweeping motion with your head, your body and bike follow.
Oh, we did not have to use hand or turn signals, in WV.

Oh Good luck to you!  Relax, it will all go fine.

Same stuff in the WA class I took too.

Also, relax!

The motorcycle can feel your stiffness and will drop you like
a horse if you are not in sync with each other; be one, be water.

And remember, physics are NOT what keeps a motorcycle
"rubber side down", it's love.

When I took my motorcycle test in 1972 I was suprised when they said use hand signals to turn.I did the left turn first then when it come to the right turn I took my hand off the gas and put my right hand straight out, that was a funny wasn't it.

Whew....

I passed. I flubbed a little on the figure eights and I thought one side road we took was a dead end. But I performed safely to his satisfaction and passed. Now to keep learn what I can out on my own.

Congrats on your test.

When I took mine in Washington (1993, rode on the street for 6 years with no endorsement) we had to pass the same course as state patrol motor officers. I failed it miserably, you can't pass on a chopper. Squeaked through on a borrowed CB350, just big enough to get an unlimited engine size endorsement.

When Lisa took her test in TN, all she had to do was start the bike, duck walk it out of the parking spot, circle the building, park and go get her picture taken. She has to take it again (let her endorsement expire, been riding without one for years), we'll be going back to that same DOL office...
