Title: What Kind of RTV for cap leak
Post by martinfilms34 on 06/14/12 at 08:00:36

What kind of RTV shoul I use? Should I use the red high temp? My worry is that I need it to hold up. I used some other kind of RTV that was not high temp and it ended up not holding up and the leak started again after 2 weeks.

Verslagen,
I used the black RTV that you linked there and it did not hold up. Because i have no way of getting the yamaha or honda type im gonna go with the red type.

I used the black stuff I could find at a local O'Reilly's/Autozone. Has held up fine for ~4,000 miles. Also, Walgreens or Wal-Mart will give you a free syringe from the pharmacy which you can use for more even application. Good luck.

The real secret to RTV is in the application. If you just immediately screw the parts together tightly, you're almost guaranteed a leak. Following the instructions is key. Apply the RTV to both parts and assemble finger tight. Allow the RTV to set slightly then fully tighten the parts. This basically turns the RTV into an O-ring which you then tighten the parts onto. If you tighten the parts immediately, you only get the adhesive benefits of the RTV and if you've ever pulled old RTV off a part, you realize it doesn't actually stick well at all. It has the adhesiveness of duct-tape at best and masking-tape everywhere else. That's not really something to be trusted to hold oil and other important fluids.

*edit* And by the way, you WANT the RTV to have pretty crappy adhesiveness because if it didn't, you'd never be able to remove the parts you just put together.
