Title: No power all of a sudden
Post by SaVaGeEaRL on 06/09/12 at 06:53:37

Bikes always run just great. It rode fine on the way to work, then fine at lunch yesterday. Then on the way home it seemed to not have as much pep, then when I got on the interstate it would top off at 60. I'd give it more gas and it wouldn't go any faster at all. What could have happened while it sat there from noon till 5:00 seems like a fuel issue maybe..

How is it from a stop? Is it just higher speeds where it lacks guts?
Miloes on it? How old is it? Recent maintenance?

From stops it's almost perfect, just a small loss of power, it's seems to be whenever you're at medium to higher speeds and using at least half the  throttle and up. It's a 2001 with a recent new plug, air filter, dyna muffler and oil change. 10,000 miles

My first guess would be that your main jet is clogged.

im having the same issue right now, just re did the whole top end, different cylinder, head, piston, rings, everything. And now it runs just fine till i hit 65 then it bogs out, not too sure whats goin on with it but ill get it figured out lol, good luck.

Wait! Stop!...  before you try anything else... do this easy test...
Just to rule out the simple possibility before going deeper...
Sounds very much like a leaky vacuum line...
;)...
Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime.. (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1)

I changed out the stock vacuum petcock to the Yamaha petcock mentioned on this site sometime last year.

Check your entire air intake system from filter to carburetor. A really dirty or wet air filter  will rob you of power. Then check your gas system as suggested. Did this start just after you changed the petcock? If so, check for gas hose kinks or anything to do with that change.

No, I have been riding all week with no issues. The petcock was changed a year ago. I rode to work just fine, then went across town for lunch. All seemed ok during this ride, but I was in town. I noticed the problem when I got on the interstate on the ride home from work. No power at the 45 and up range and only after half the throttle has been applied did it decide it just wasn't gonna go any faster lol. It managed to get up 60 but that's about it, and it sure won't pass anyone now in fourth gear. I'm gonna take the carb apart I suppose and take a look. I just ordered some new jets and hope lancer can get them to me soon.

Could be as simple as a dirty slide,,

I've never had the carb apart. Is this slide you mean part of the carb? it's funny I been an auto tech for 26 years but dunno hardly nuttin about a bike lol

Put Babbit's, Ron Ayers, Or Bike Bandit in your favorites for microfiche views of anything you may need or for a view for assembling. The slide is in the top of the carb under the "square" plate with a membrane under it. I will now turn you back over to Justin. Didn't mean to interrupt. Good luck.

try some seafoam if you're afraid to twist a wrench.

Naw, I'm not afraid to tear anything apart. Just like to know a bit about what I'm doing first. I have the clymer manual and all. I just wanna exhaust all other options before taking the carb off. I'll give some sea foam a try maybe tomorrow.

Gettin the carb off is a hassle, & gettin the screws out is another hassle. Go with the seafoam first. Check the main jet, tho, its easy to get to, even with the carb on the bike. Drain the bowl, dont have the petcock on prime. Look at what comes out,
I use Antiseize on carb bolts. Never had one come loose,
Lots of us have swapped the stock carb bolts for SS allen heads. I use a/sieze on them, too.

Sea foam to the rescue lol. Put 2 ounces in my full tank, and within 5 minutes all power was restored. I have some jets coming anyways to finally rejet the carb to match the dyna muffler and k&n filter I have had installed for the past year lol. Will also prolly do the spacer mod. Will be nice not riding on the first choke step like I have since 2001 hahaa.

just some minor slide sticking then.
white spacer mode will help while you wait for the jet kit
but remember to undo when you rejet or it'll throw off the selection of the main jet.  not mention reduction in mpg
