Title: Ticking problem.
Post by Dutch82 on 06/05/12 at 07:28:09

Just recently I noticed a ticking noise while slowing down to stop at a light.  Now I hear it a lot more often.  It happens both when I accelerate or slow down.  It ticks at low speeds (possibly at high speeds, but I can't hear it) and makes a tick about four times for every one tire rotation and sounds like it is coming from the left side of the bike, but I can't really pinpoint where.  It will make the noise when running or not, and it will tick going forward or backwards.

Any ideas?

So it only ticks when the bike is moving regardless of whether the motor is running?   Have you had a tire off recently?   I mean off the rim, as in replacement.   Ahhh, wait.  It just occured to me that the wheels run tubes, so that wouldn't be the problem.   I was thinking of debris inside the tire.

I would take off the front sprocket cover and check for tightness. The description you gave would lead me to that area to start with.

Other things I thought about but dont think may be the cause are, loose spokes, worn or broken brake parts.

Also the transmission is spinning whether is is running or not. There could be possible issues in there.

But I would check the sprocket, pulley or whatever they call it on a belt drive.

IF the noise is coming from the front - you might check the front brake disc.

Get the rear tire off the ground, get a piece of tubing that you can press against your ear, 3/8ths, 1/2" ish, plug the other ear, quiet location, spin tire, poke tube in places you think its coming from, mite be time to enlist a friend

Check your front belt sprocket, I nailed it with an impact when assy, then bent lock washer.. It may have worked loose.. I checked it before shipping, but they do work in...

How many ft-lb's does the front sprocket need to be torqued to?  I just did a once over on the Clymers and didn't see it.  A previous post claims 95.  Is that correct?

Also, a 32mm socket!?!  My Dad sold Snap-On tools for 20 years and this is the first time I have ever been in his garage and he has not had the tool I needed.

If my memory serves me a standard size will fit 1-3/4 I believe.. I can't believe it came loose, torque 73# - 94#  ...

take a long screwdriver and put the handle behind your ear
place the tip where you think it's ticking and trace it down
just a ticking noise aint enough to help you.

These valves do ticktickticktickticktickticktick.  I just adjusted mine so they're quiet right now but it won't last.

Would they be ticking with the bike off though?  This is a louder ticking noise that happens with the bike running or not, and happens if I roll forward or backwards.

@Retread - I don't know if it is the front sprocket.  That was just what was suggested (and easy to get to), so I was going to check that first.

I wouldnt run it again till I got that front pulley looked at. When those teeth go away, thats a problem,

My ears deceived me.  I took off the pulley cover, belt guard and left rear shock yesterday to have a closer look.  I narrowed it down to the rear wheel, but it appears it is coming from the RIGHT side of the rear wheel.  I don't have a hoist, so I'm going to have to wait till a buddy has some time to help me out so I can get it up in the air.

It doesn't sound like a bearing.  Maybe just something stuck in the brake pad?

JOG, they're on the tight side of specs, but they are within specs.

Something to check if nothing else obvious pans out:

This may be a long shot, but I had a similar problem on my old '81 Gold Wing.  When I finally found the source of the noise, it turned out that the rear wheel bearings were fitting a bit loosely in their housings.  The wheel bearings, having steel housings (of course) had "hogged out" their housings in the hub, which was made of aluminum.

Turned out that it was a known problem on those bikes...the only published solution being to plunk down big bucks for a new rear wheel.

Well, I'm too cheap for that, so after thinkin' on it, I miked the bearing housings' ODs and then the wheel hub cavities' IDs.  Came up with a number that represented the clearance between the two.  Got hold of some strips of stainless steel shim strips that were the proper thickness, popped those into the hub, drove in the wheel bearings....end of problem.  I had that bike for another 30,000 miles or so and the problem never came back.

Cause?  Well, I was guilty of overloading that bike a bit when embarking on long trips..... :-[

IHTH someone!
