Title: Whitewall Tires
Post by Badass94Cad on 06/01/12 at 16:27:58

I'm having trouble finding some whitewall tires that will fit the Savage properly.  Can anybody recommend some?  It seems the Dunlop and Avon are discontinued...?  :(

Yeah, I went through every whitewall tire option on that site.  There's a front tire that will fit (Avon AV71F).  But I can't find any rear tires to fit.  The only 15" tires I found were far too wide (180mm).

I definitely DO NOT want to do tire paint.  :o

Any other suggestions where to look for tires, or known existing options?  Otherwise, are there easy wheel swaps that will get me more common size options?  :-[

if you go to 130/90-16, then you'll find dozens of choices (it's a Harlet standard)
A gs550 is a direct swap, but most are alloy wheels, not many are spoked.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Yeah, I saw the 16s were way more plentiful than the 15s, that's for sure.  I definitely want to keep the spoke wheel look though.

If anybody can suggest another spoke rear wheel or rear whitewall tire, I'd really appreciate it.  8-)

Yeah, I saw the Shinkos too, but

1.  I don't know anything about that brand.  Are they any good?

and

2.  They still don't offer the correct size for the rear.  I'd have to switch to a 16" rim to work, since as far as I know a 150/90-15 is going to be both too wide and too tall for the rear.

:'(

Any other 15" whitewall tire or 16" spoke wheel options?  :-/

Be prepared to replace the stock fender bolts with low profile button heads, and possibly do some grinding on the swingarm. :'(  And because each tire manufacturer is slightly different, it still might not fit. :(

Yeah, hopefully it's not too bad.  From the various threads I read, it seems at best there's no/minimal problem, and at worst bolt change and grinding.  I hadn't actually heard of that size not fitting, so hopefully I don't encounter that problem...  :-[

Let us know what you end up with. I am looking for a white line tire not complete whitwall.

SALB says that 150/90 size rubbed above 60mph, but a quick grind on the weld fixed the problem.

Best bet in a scrawny 15" tire, be it blackwall, whiteline, redline, wide white... aircooled VW tires. You can find 135-15s all day, bias ply or radial, made in USA, China, Taiwan, Japan, Germany... Take time to get used to the new handling, if you've never ridden a "square" rear tire it takes some getting used to. But is perfectly safe. And the tire should pretty much outlast the bike.

hi im new here, just started building a bobber, maxxas do a whitewall at 140/90/15 looks like it would fit ok

If you found a source buy all you can get. Maxxis quit the cruiser market about 4 years ago. As did their parent company Cheng Shin. Just remember, tires have a shelf life. Especially cheap tires.

Have you checked with Ryca to see what tires they use on their bobber.

No I didn't know Ryca even had a bobber kit. I thought they did the cafe thing.

They use 150/90-15 Shinko.

Title: Re: Whitewall Tires
Post by WD on 06/27/12 at 21:17:34

Shinko are pretty lightweight tires. May have a short service life.

That said, I ran a Cheng Shin (lightweight tire) on my Savage for years without problems.

And my other bike is getting Shinko, can't find the sizes I want anywhere else... 2.75-19 and 3.50-18.

Title: Re: Whitewall Tires
Post by WD on 06/28/12 at 19:36:19

I won't buy light duty mc tires again, simply because of how I ride. I got a decent service life from the Cheng Shin I had on the rear of the bike solely because it was backup for my Vulcan. Since it is now my primary bike (or will be if I ever finish putting it back together) it is getting a VS800 spec Dunlop. Same size, heavier construction. Even with the plan to shave the sidewalls (I hate raised white letter tires) down to whitewalls.

Even fully trimmed out like mine, the Savage still weighs less than an Intruder.

FWIW, the tire dealer we ordered Dunlops for the 1500 Drifter here  said Shinkos have a maybe 4K mile life. And that was in Savage sizes.

Tire paint or Port-a-walls?

Neither, or just whitewalls in general?

Typically my philosphy would be no Portawalls or paint, but I'm at that desperation point now.  :-[

Paint. Easier to touch up paint than to replace a busted plastic piece.

That's the way I'm leaning. Pics don't look bad & they won't come flying off!  ;)
