Title: action/re-action
Post by renegade1 on 05/30/12 at 09:07:05

hey guys just been reading some threads on if you replace the air filter to a cone style you have to adjust the carb because your now getting more air flow... is this fact? and if so what needs to be done and how???? Hopefully ya'll can help me out, thanks for reading ;D

What needs to be done,...is pay attention to how this change effects your engine performance...
It usually requires some jetting changes...
Read my guide, and do these tests, and follow the recommendations...

Serowbot's carb tuning tips for beginners... (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1309246277)

Quote:
A good indicator of overall jetting is the weather...if popping/backfiring increases on humid days, or at higher elevation, that indicates rich....less popping at those times indicates lean.

Drill out the brass plug on the idle mix screw... adjust for smooth and steady idle... if it needs more than 3 turns out, go one step larger on the pilot jet.  The pilot jet will have an effect on MPG's... If you want good gas mileage, don't get carried away there...
CW, in, is going leaner,... CCW, out, is going richer...

The needle jet is adjusted by varying the spacer thickness under the plate that mounts the needle to the slide... this has the biggest effect on acceleration and in the midrange area... Say 60+ mph cruising, and half throttle acceleration...

To test the main, accelerate from 30 or 40 mph, in 4th or 5th gear at full throttle for several seconds, then reduce throttle by about 1/8,...if power increases for a second, you are lean on the main jet.  Go up one jet size and test again.

Jets are incrementally additive.... starting with the idle mix, then pilot, then needle, then main...  Each jet adds it's volume to the next in line...  Wide open throttle is accessing all of them, so changes in one, adds to next and the next..
I start at the bottom, and work my way up.... idle, pilot, needle, then main...

Is it most likely going to have to be altered with the new filter put in? or is that just in a worst case situation?

likely...

thanks man, im gunna rebuild my carb before i put it all together. do you know if a 4 inch cone would fit on with the stock air box still attached?

I'm pushing a K&N cone filter on my carb boot, raask exhaust, 60 pilot, 160 main, half stack spacer mod... I think I needa come down on the jets some though because I'm guzzlin petrol like a wino in a distillery..

It's rough to tune too, because go up a hill and get pops, go down a hill and they're gone :D

I'm gonna try no spacer at all, then half a stack and back off a size.. see if I can't get it smoothed out... slight flat spots in throttle response here and there, or could it be more torque/power in new spots??  :-/

once you get that all figured out let me know what you have done, im interested in your mods, how much has that all cost you so far? and you figure a carb rebuild would come in handy its a 88 and was sitting for two years NOT STARTED by previous owner and before that i dont believe anything has been done i already got some work dont to the engine with new gaskets and heli coil the head threads.
