Title: More heat than I was looking for
Post by Greg on 05/28/12 at 11:43:56

I went on a therapeutic ride earlier. I learned (hopefully) some valuable lessons afterwards. First, when squatting down to check the air filter do not lean your knees on the hotter than Hades muffler. Canvas work pants do not make a good heat shield. Second, while reaching under the bike to see what is hanging, do not place your forearm on the hotter than Hades head pipe. And if you do, don't do it twice. However, if your arm is all sweaty, it makes a cool sizzle sound. Twice. Third, while using the heat gun to soften the stickers on the side covers and admiring the glowing orange elements, if the concentrator on the end falls off, ignore your instinct to pick it up. Should you choose to do so, really interesting words will spew from your mouth and you will look around to see if anyone saw what you did. At least your finger prints will be gone and you could go on a crime spree.

Your description is funny but I bet you were not laughing while you were burning yourself. Especially the fourth time. In one day.
Becha learned something though! :-?

Even worse is if you get off the bike after a long ride, take off your helmet and gloves and jacket, light your pipe, and check if the header has cooled down enough to put the cover on... with the back of your hand.
Nope. :-[

There's also the fun experience of rubbing the bottom of your vented armored riding pants against the muffler -- and discovering that the easy-off zipper has melted shut!

Jeeez Greg!  Next time you do any maintenance set your camera on movie mode and post the clip so we can all enjoy.   lol

One of the funniest things I ever saw was onetime when a friend and I were riding up the coast hwy and pulled over for gas and a soda.  Being summer, my friend took off his nylon windbreaker, laying it on the seat to refuel his bike.   He was behind me as I refueled, so I couldn't see him, but I suddenly heard a loud "ohhh god".   I turned to watch his windbreaker, that a gust of wind had blown off the seat onto his exhaust pipe, shrink to a tiny Ken sized version (i.e., Barbie's boyfriend).   He bought a sweatshirt in the quickstop to finish the ride.

"I went on a therapeutic ride earlier."

I have heard heat can be therapeutic. Now I know what they didn't mean.

Also, there was a link yesterday on MSN to an article that touted the stress relieving properties of using a few four-letter words. Apprently it allows you to withstand pain 50% better.
