Post by chad levert on 05/27/12 at 12:39:20

fixed my leaking cylinder head and plug with some red rtv. im still leaking oil. i THINK i may be leaking from the copper washer for the head bolts, idk. could it leak from there? should i put a little silicone under the washer and let it cure fully before i torque down????

I just bought my 96' Savage a few weeks ago, and there isn't a drop of oil leaking anywhere on it. I'm guessing the PO fixed the plug oil leak on mine.

Ive never torqued the head, 20,000 miles, only leak Ive had was where the clutch lever passes thru the case, & I put a new O-ring in there when I was in it last. As of now, no leaks,,

Don't think there's an oil passage near those bolts.
But an improper seal on the head cover could cause oil to migrate thru the head gasket to any of those bolts.  And once oil is in there, ain't going to be easy to stop.

I suppose it applies here as well.

mine wont soon!!! the threads in the bottom end to hold this bolt in pulled right out. noticed it started puking while on its stand. I had to get a full gasket kit and since i have not ripped apart a motorcycle yet i have no idea what im doing  :-[ seriously need to learn haha but its costing $300 some odd dollars and then it was $140 for the gasket kit. Hopefully getting it back this week!!!!!

Once I had the head plug fixed, there was some residual oil the shop neglected to clean, so once that was all cleared up, I am now proud to say I am oil free (except for where it's actually supposed to be).

Mine did when I purchased it 3 years ago.  I got the engine gasket set and it still leaked from the speedo cable.  Now I found a fix for the speedo cable leak (see http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1336955595). Haven't leaked a drop in the last 1000 miles.  Just rolled past 13000 today.  Had only 7500 when I bought it.

Mine's a 2009 with 7k+ and don't leak anywhere.

Mine (see my signature block) currently has 12,400 miles on it.

No oil leaks or weeps anywhere...perfectly tight at the moment.  But, I keep waiting for the next one.

In the past, I've had the head plug leak, the speedo cable leak, and the big starter o-ring leak.  I also had a valve cover weep once when I boofed  the torque sequence.

Nothing for the last 2200 miles, though (KOW...twice!).

All I had was the plug leak at 7000 miles. Fixed it and nice and dry since with just over 11,000 miles on my 2001.

Leaks like a rusted out sieve. Head plug, clutch arm passage, starter area, wiring from the alternator, fork seals...

Has leaked since day one. It's a Suzuki (lowest QC of the Japanese makers) knock-off of old British singles. Not unexpected. The GS750T I used to ride down here leaked worse.

I just keep an eye on the oil level and top off when needed. Nothing brake cleaner won't take off. In 10 years the forks only leaked out a 1/4 cup combined (maybe). If I run synthetic the crankcase is dry  (empty) in a couple hours, if I run regular old oil it only leaks out a cup or so in a couple thousand miles.

Adds character.

I bought mine last Fall; 1994 with 12,000 miles.
No leaks yet, but then I haven't gotten it running yet either.
Does that count?   ::)

Mine has almost 43K on it, and while it does burn a little oil at speed, it doesn't leak a drop.

The quote we used when I was into Mopars was "fill the oil and check the gas."  :P :-/

My savage doesn't leak [knocks on wood].

I bought mine used about 2 months ago with 21,312 miles on the clock. Have put about 900 miles on it since and have not seen a drop of oil. Either the po was righteous about maintaining his ride, or I got a Cherry. (opposite of a lemon?)  Lucky either way!

My '06 had several leaks.

Head cover by the spark plug - gooped it from the outside with high temp silicone, fixed.

Front upper cylinder to head nut - cleaned stud and nut and put lots of loctite on the stud and fastened the nut, fixed.

Crankcase clutch side cover near the front of the cylinder - After four failed attempts with new gaskets, on the fifth one I put some additional hi temp silicone in that area, fixed.

Head gasket in area of the L125 bolt, due to being stripped by previous owner/shop - Ordered the other L130 bolt that goes next to it and filed the tip to act like a tap and cut it down 5mm deeper in the cylinder and fastened it, fixed

Everything had been bone dry since about a year, now the clutch lever shaft let's oil seep out on higher speed highway runs. I probably just keep wiping it off, unless it gets way worse, because I really don't want to have five more attempts to get the clutch cover sealed correctly AND I really don't wanna see what the tensioner looks ;) like after verslagen's plunger mod in second Bole and 6,000 miles later. I'm just afraid...I just wanna ride.  :)

Oh yeah!  I had that one too.  I put Permatex Ultra Copper RTV Silicone Gasket sealant on the threads and torqued the nut to spec.  End of problem....

Dj12midnit, a 2000 mile ride? darn that is awesome. You must have been on vacation cause that's a whole lot of riding. I've often thought about taking off like that. How long did it take? Gotta have a good seat? Any problems with the bike? Where did you go? Sorry for all the questions, but a 2000 mile ride sounds like quite an adventure
