Title: Bike not starting
Post by cbp676 on 05/27/12 at 06:15:20

I seem to be having a problem with my 1998 Suzuki Savage.  I purchased a new battery, because the old one just would not fully charge.  I sprayed all the electrical connectors with cleaner.  I replaced the solenoid.  I attached a battery jumper to the starter itself and it turned on just fine whirling away.  I can push start it to turn on but I am not 18 anymore and it is not so easy.  What else could be the problem?  I am just getting one click when I am trying to start it.

my fuses are fine also.  I rode it a couple of Fridays ago with no issue.  The following Monday morning just one click.  It did rain over that weekend a little but not a lot.  Gas is too expensive to not drive the bike daily.  Help.

Hi cbp676, where did you get your battery?   I'm curious because I am looking for a maint free type that fits.

I will try to find the ground strap.  i purchased the battery from Euromotion in West Palm Beach FL.  It is  Deka battery.

the ground strap seems just fine and secure.  I am under the impression the ground strap is the wiring from the battery to the bike itself. ?

Here's the ig and starting circuit, much easier to follow w/o all the other clutter.

you can push start it, so that eliminates the ig circuit
you get 1 click (which is the decomp solenoid) so that eliminates the safeties.
You replaced the starter relay... why? new or used? did you verify that it worked? how about the old one?

I replaced it with a new one because i had started the starter motor by connecting it to a jump battery and thought the only thing left between the battery and the starter was the solenoid.  I bought the solenoid for $17 on amazon.  The old may still be good.  not sure.

I'd look at the starter button, then the wiring running to the relay.
