Title: How far did you get on your stock tires?
Post by CaptialThumper on 05/24/12 at 21:00:26

I'm wondering when I have to start worrying about changing my original stock tires. I stuck a finger in my treads today just to see how much I have left, but having bought my bike used, I don't know how much tread the tires started with. I looked but couldn't find wear indicators in the tread like car tires have.

My bike has 6100 km on it. How far did you folks go before having to change?

At 6000 miles, my 2007 had almost bald tires in back, and the front was really weather checking.  Just replaced this month.

I got 14,000+ on the stock IRCs.  The back was down to the wear bars.  The front was showing weather checking and had been showing about the same amount since 10K or so.

4700 miles on my Kenda Challenger (front) and Kenda Cruiser (rear) since last June. Front looks new. Rear is only slightly squared.

Stock IRC lasted about 4000 miles. Front about 6K. Replacement (no longer available) 130/90-15 Cheng Shin has around 14K on it. Second new IRC front (free from a former site member) has around 4K on it and is done, deceased, kaput.

I put 44K miles on a set of D404s on a much heavier bike and still had 60% or better tread life when I sold it.

Next set? D404 front, Nankang or similar aircooled VW 135SR15.

Wow, lots of variation here. I would guess that my rears is. Loser to wearing out than the front, which seems to square with opinions so far.

sjaskow: where does one find wear bars on the IRC stock tires? On my car's all seasons, they are small raised areas in the tread grooves, but I don't see such things on my bike.

My Savage's (see signature block) rear OEM IRC tire was to the wear bars at 8700 miles.  The OEM front IRC is still on there at 12,400 miles, but is about to the wear bars and needs to be changed yesterday.

My IRC tires have wear bars.  One way to find them is to look for a small triangle on the sidewall:

See the small embossed triangle, pointing to the left?  Said triangle indicates the circumferential location of the wear bars.  If you look in the sipes abeam one of those triangles, you'll find at least one wear bar.

IHTH someone!

Original IRC rear was showing canvas, nylon stuff  at 7000miles. Front IRC has about 9300 miles, it seems to have worn more on the right side. I shall replace beforwe canvas nylon stuff shows.

My IRC rear blew out on me at 7800, so I just replaced both (since the tires are only safe for 5 years) with a pair of D404 and I have not looked back since.  I have almost 12k on the clock now and the rear is starting to square up just a bit.

The stock tire was a slick at 7000 miles on my bike.

My IRC rear was scary, it never felt surefooted, I was always "Riding in the rain". Thats why I ran it till it was worn out,It gave me practice riding lousy traction,,The ends of my pegs started getting rubbed away when I got a good tire,

stock rear wore out between 3- 4000mi (can't remember exactly it's been 4 years) front lasted about 8000 if i remember.

i've had kenda challengers on front and rear since then

with the kenda tires:  i've changed out 3 rears and still on the 1st front tire - i'm around 29.5k miles, so  i get over 8k on rear, 20k+ on front
