Title: Update: Dnepr sidecar project v1.0 & gardening
Post by Stimpy - FSO on 05/21/12 at 17:17:03

This thread will feature realtime photos on the progress
of all 3 of my summer projects and your input will not only
be highly appreciated but actually reflected in the outcome.

They're here!   :D

http://s13.postimage.org/3pqhv6odz/180520122728.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

I got 2 of them you see, one complete to mount on maybe
a used BMW (that I have not even purchased yet) and another
one without a chassis or wheel, just the boot (2x1 shipping costs).
... why?  you may ask

http://s18.postimage.org/853tfsi09/180520122730.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

Cause I'm turning that one into the coolest kid-carriage EVER!

Not quite sure how yet, all I know is that it involves an axle or 2,
a lot of welding, some form of turning mechanism, anywhere form
3 to 5 wheels and a bicycle, or half of one for power, that will be
probably placed in the rear and not on the side, don't know yet.

...any ideas on the design?

http://s15.postimage.org/mpgawvnkb/210520122735.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

It is not heavy but it is long (about 70" x 20" x 20" / 180x50x50cm),
this is going to be one cool, big, ride!

http://s17.postimage.org/tamldckun/210520122731.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

Now back to the other one, first step was to get it off the pallet
and attach the wheel.

http://s15.postimage.org/7055wo64r/210520122737.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

Done.

http://s17.postimage.org/cj92zykjz/210520122738.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

Then, with a bit of creativity, to make it mobile,
cause this one is kinda heavy (200lb?).

http://s7.postimage.org/mazatazln/210520122739.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

Tada!  It's off the ground and it rolls.
It can now be pushed around, you can sit on it and it can be crashed!

http://s18.postimage.org/72gtib5ex/210520122740.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

some more unpacking

http://s16.postimage.org/uj433jbxx/210520122741.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

came with a vinyl cover, vinyl seats and tool bag.

http://s15.postimage.org/p9zeulngr/210520122742.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

The tools are hilarious! I truly know now why Russia went under.
The round thing is a pump that srsly belongs in a museum.

http://s17.postimage.org/3wepoah73/210520122746.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

The backrest flips forward to reveal an ample trunk.
The locking mechanism is the strangest thing ever,
kinda hard to explain, the "key" turns a spring-screw
that releases the latch.

http://s18.postimage.org/462z9iecp/210520122748.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
... (http://postimage.org/)

Well that seat will require some re-enforcement.
(and sounds like my old spring bed at summer camp)

http://s13.postimage.org/s7nng6x9z/210520122749.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

So there it goes for now in the garage nicely tucked in
while I'll calmly look for a suiting motorcycle to attach it to,
maybe even a savage, need to figure out the legal DMV stuff first.
Anyone attached one of these things to a bike before?

http://s14.postimage.org/octwogue9/210520122750.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

And this is my 3rd project; potatoes.
Anybody know anything about planting potatoes?  Seriously.

http://s10.postimage.org/ujsxndog9/210520122751.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

Today I cleared up a patch about 3 x 20' from the back
of my garden, tomorrow I'll plant the already rooting spuds.
Next week cucumbers and squash.

Post by Stimpy - FSO on 05/22/12 at 12:36:46

Nop, no wheat, lol.

But people must understand the fact that wheat itself is not bad,
it is the commercial ultra-refined flour made from the
modern gmo "dwarf" wheat variant that is the problem.

Is kinda like comparing rough-cut cane sugar to GMO-HFCS.

And of course frequency and amount of consumption of this pleb poison!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

aaaanyway...

I had my day off yesterday and all 3 projects are up and running.

1) I got a large stable metal frame (from an old bed)
for the bicycle-cart, this is a good start.

I still don't know if I want a trike, like an Ice cream bike or
just a classic style bicycle side-car attached to a beach cruiser;
the trike idea kinda appeals more to me.

http://s16.postimage.org/n2fgexh91/cool_bike_mom.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)
(2 wheels won't do, 3 is the minimum for this project, but you get the idea)

http://s10.postimage.org/v19fisoi1/Dreirad_Kinder_Transportrad_FT_9005_Gelb.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)
(imagine the dnepr in the front, yeah, the front-end would hang a bit but it's pretty light)

http://s15.postimage.org/gciqarhwr/dfg.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)
(imagine the dnepr on the side, the other side)

2) the motorcycle side-car is getting tricky already, sometimes
I fuc7ing HATE germany and it's mindless bureaucratic BULL SH1T
socialist regulatory über-complicated system dammit, now they
want proof of purchase (a title) and a TÜV/CE certificate (the
equivalent to DOT) just to start the process to see IF is even
roadworthy and can be eventually permitted to be attached
to a motorbike, which also needs to be factory sidecar-certified.
Of all that I have none.

In neighboring Holland there is NO control for motorbikes,
just insure them and you are done, dammed germans.

::)

...however there is more than one way to skin a cat
(where does that saying come from anyway,  Schrödinger?)

3) Gardening; it rained yesterday, good for the spuds.

A good friend of mine keeps leaves packed around his potato plants.  It must help achieve the proper pH balance 'cause the plants get really green.

Post by splash07 on 05/22/12 at 20:31:58

Stimp, the projects look great. I think that you should go with 3 wheels for the bike/cart/sidecar....im sorry I dont really know what to call it. Simple is usually better when you let kids play with it.

As for potatos, they like a sandy soil, makes it easier for the root (what you eat) to get large, and delicious. And, yes the pH is always important. You should consider having your soil tested by your local county extension office.

Oh wow, I didn't realize when you said "kid carriage" you meant a pedalable thing the adult can ride too..  was thinking more along the lines of a jog-stroller.

Greetings wambr all the way to Russia!
I'm pleased to see how international this forum is getting.

Yeah boule I originally just wanted to do make it simple, like this:

http://www.wimp.com/babystroller/

but after thinking about it a bit, I now think I want 1HP on it (human power)
it just makes more sense, to me, to be able to go about a couple of
miles around or to the store or whatever, then again I could do both!!

...how does "now with detachable bike" sound?

:D

what is a project with sidecar?

Title: Re: The Dnepr is here!  realtime pics - need ideas
Post by Stimpy - FSO on 05/24/12 at 13:00:08

a project (noun): [ch1055][ch1051][ch1040][ch1053],  [ch1087][ch1088][ch1086][ch1077][ch1082][ch1090], [ch1093][ch1086][ch1073][ch1073][ch1080]

A project is: a hobby, an interest, a plan;
something to do with my time and my hands this summer.

In this case 2 things:

- to build a cart for my child

- and to buy a large motorcycle for my new sidecar.

-----------------------------------------------------------

wambr, do you have a Suzuki Savage in Russia??

Do you have a photo?

Put it here:

See you soon, you can practice your english here any time.

--  UPDATE - 12.JUNE.12  - UPDATE  --

As I mentioned in another post earlier today:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1339695450
(for details of this band-drive bike click this link).

...the new bike, 3rd wheel and axle for my hack project just arrived, yay!

http://s18.postimage.org/ko447xoi1/140620122770.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

The bike is a "new tech/hybrid" direct-drive model, so lets see how
the plastic/carbon fiber parts and kevlar band hold up with time.

I had not bought a new bike in over 20 years so when comparing
this one and other models I've seen lately to my old Costco
bulletproof mountainbike these seem kinda light and flimsy,
...mmmm, Chinese should be EXPERTS at this sh1t, go figure!.

On the positive side after test ridding this "brand-name" bike
for a few hours I'm happy to report it rides well and feels solid

This is sorda how the finished vehicle is going to potentially look.

http://s13.postimage.org/8yz7hgcjr/140620122780.jpg (http://postimage.org/)
.. (http://postimage.org/)

The wheel, tyre and axle I found dirt cheap online
and come from a 1980's Kawasaki Z440-C,
a new chance at life for a good ol' classic bike.

I really wanted to make a tricycle with 2 wheels up front but
I decided against it because it would just be SO long and heavy
making it pretty hard to steer and also interfering with visibility
and not being able to see the holes, bumps and squirrels up front,
so I think we're gonna go for an old fashion side-hack.

These are a few bike I found online and ideas on how to attach it (the most difficult part).

Next project, if this one doesn't kill me like a train de-railing,
will probably be something sorta like this, maybe next year:

http://s18.postimage.org/lwa4ngseh/The_Pi_cture_Postcard_Wo_007.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

I think I would build something much lighter & pull it behind a bicycle. Stopping wont work well at all & youll be turned by the mass of the sidecar.

Your potato plants look good!  Don't have any very recent pics of mine, but this was 3 weeks ago.  They started flowering about 10 days ago and are about hip-high now.  I think we planted a few too many...   ;)

Wow!

Nice, that's a whole lotta spuds jeez,
are you gonna sell them at the farmers mkt?

I planted just 40 on a 15' patch, this year
was just a little experiment, of those 18
are out so far and 5 of them are really big,
the rest are lagging behind a bit, I need to
figure out this whole "seed-potato/soil-pH" thing.

The tomatoes I have 20 plants, I'm going to
hang them up-side down in buckets soon.

Title: Re: Update:  The Dnepr is here!  Pics, need
Post by babyhog on 06/14/12 at 13:07:44

Didn't get to plant any tomatoes (or anything else) this year.  Too many other projects.  And we've never planted in this area before, so we had no idea whether they would take off or not.  Appears they did! lol.  I figure I can give plenty of them away at my work, maybe even sell 'em cheap.  Wanted to plant corn, but never got around to that either.

I have no idea about the pH, and we have only watered them once, from a creek that runs around the garden area.  Its been dry here, then wet, then dry again.  Cool... then blazing hot, crazy-azz weather.  But they seem to like it just fine!

Oh, once they get to the point of being able to dig up, I hear the deer might eat them, so we'll have to wait and see what happens on that front.

BTW Babyhog

Check out a documentary called
"Back to Eden".

It's about sustainable farming techniques,
mainly growing stuff with little water, no
pesticides, fertilizers and little to none
soil prep done by covering up your crops
with wood chips, mulch and natural top-soils,
the way many ancient cultures used to do,
this way avoiding erosion, pests, weeds and
specially retaining moisture under the surface;
worth a watch. Good FAQ section too @ homepage.

Watch it here free and legal:

Yup, i actually thought about exactly this possibility.

I might end up installing a brake system for the cart wheel.

The thing is that this will be a 5 MPH vehicle to be used
around the block and in a bicycle-only park pathway,
so no big deal, I hope.

However if the thing turns out to be totally clumsy and undriveable
I will order the same exact wheel and axle (old Kawa Z440 front)
and turn it into a 2 wheel hitch-trailer just like you mentioned, I'll
hopefully have it operational  as soon as next Wednesday and we'll
see then, I just have not had any time to get around to actually soldering
the frame, just too much stuff going on right now plus 60+ hours of
work a week dammit!

To be honest the main reason I wanted a side car and not a trailer
is because they just look so darn cool when mounted on a bicycle!   8-)

...and also because everyone and their grandma have a geeky-looking
bike-hitch they use too tow their filthy kids and dogs around and this
kinda annoys me and do not wanna become one of those kind of ppl.

;D

But many thanks for the thoughtful advice man!
Will keep you up to date.

but ARE GETTING EATEN BY SLUGS & SNAILS!!

any ideas?

already tried copper wire and used coffee grounds,

Don't wanna use chemicals, I heard soapy water works, is this true?

Tomato
plants have been re-potted twice and are almost
2 feet high now, I'll hang them upside-down this week.

Mentally, put a line from sidecar tire contact point on the ground, to front tire. Now, look at where a passenger will, well, Could, put his weight outside that line. Looks to me like it could possibly lift the bikes rear tire. Mite wanna watch for that. Maybe Im just not seein how its gonna work, IDK,

can I do something wrong in the translation into Russian language please forgive me. but I guess you have a question on securing the sidecar to bike. can help a bit, or suggest, because it was the experience of riding and exploitation of a motorcycle with sidecar (Ural).

Title: Re: Update: Dnepr sidecar project v1.0 & garde
Post by Stimpy - FSO on 08/01/12 at 08:26:14

So here ya' go, it's done (kinda).

Not unlike a Bonsai, this IS a work-in-progress but
v1.0 is ready and fully rideable (well, till something on it breaks that is).

So how does it ride?

Well, like a modern light-weight beach-cruiser with a
bed frame and a kawasaki front wheel attached
to it, that is how... in a nutshell: kinda bouncy.   :D

Today I took it for a 2 mile ride in the country and
no problems, uphill is hard but I'm pretty fit so whatever,
brakes fine and my super "swing" system for turning works
surprisingly well, you just have to steer a bit with your
shoulders that's all.

-------------------

Potatoes, tomatoes, ginger, berry bushes and herbs are all
doing well after last week's biblical rains, potatoe plants are
waist-high and tomatoes are still tiny and green, will post pics
of garden soonish.

Also been using the 2stroke scooter all summer just for kicks,
takes me where I want to go at a respectable 45mph and gets
over 90mpg, sweet.

The other sidecar still lays in the garage awaiting for proper
funds to buy a "real" motorcycle to pair it with, I'll keep you posted.

in General, the idea very very interesting.
it seems to me this sidecar looks too heavy.... maybe worth the look of the motorcycle Java
for examle...http://images02.olx.com.ua/ui/16/79/59/1323771309_290767059_1----VELOREX-560-.jpg

but if the choice was made to Dnepr sidecar, then in my opinion you need to minimize the side of the carriage, and make a transition to the windshield of sidecar..

Aw man!  [smiley=angry.gif] With that fancy leany-turny system, you won't be able to fly the sidecar!

Just kidding, great work. Your kid will be thrilled to ride in it, fly or no fly.

He LOVES it!  keeps bugging me all day to go out again, this will be
our daily morning ritual before I leave to work weather permits.

No pics from the kid cause of internet privacy issues sorry  ;)

And no, sidecar is not too heavy, it's well balanced and has
3 weight distribution points, rides fine.
