Title: VW Beetle-ish high-pitched sqeaks from engine?
Post by Dave Sisk on 05/19/12 at 09:11:30

Hey guys...my neighbor (who used to ride motorcycles) mentioned the VW Beetle-ish squeak that comes from the engine and exhaust at higher revs.  That's the best way I can think of to describe the sound...just like an old VW Beetle under throttle.

He said it shouldn't sound like that, and some bearings or something may be going bad.  Is that sound normal for these bikes?  If not, what should I be checking?  It's a 2005 S40 with just under 6000 miles.  I've had it for about 3 weeks or so...I've checked the oil level of course (it shows a little high in the oil window), but have not changed the oil yet.  Don't know if that's relevent, but figured I'd mention it.

Thanks!
Dave

We got them squeaks -- lots of them.   Can you get more specific as to the source location.

If you can't localize it, we'll start guessing -- and there are a lot of sqeaks out there in sqeakland.

Stock exhaust sounds that way,,Yours still stock?

If that is coming out of the engine itself,, Id be changin oil & running a magnet thru it to see what I found & Id autopsy the oil filter,

How many miles? Cam chain been checked?

I drilled 4 1/2" holes in the rear of the exhaust, but that's the only mod (other than adjusting the idle fuel mixture screw a bit).

Hmmm...I *think* I hear it best from the exhaust actually.  Let me go check it out some more...maybe I can record it.  I have not checked the cam chain tensioner stuff, valve clearance, etc., yet.

Thanks,
Dave

OK, I recorded it...you can hear it best from the exhaust, but can also hear it from the side of the engine.  Here's a url:

Thanks guys!

OK, cool then.  If that's the way it sounds, then that's the way it sounds.  ;)

I really like the exhaust mod, btw.

Cheers,
Dave

I'm hoping that's a normal sound. Mine is very similar!

It IS the same as on a beetle. The stock beetle exhaust pipes have baffles similar to the baffle on the Savage. It is the baffles vibrating. I once had a beetle and hated that noise so much that I threw them out and replaced them with straight aluminum pipes that I fabricated on the lathe. After it sounded like a Porches and it also revved more freely. Beetles are choked down primarily through the exhaust. Even just removing the tips makes them run way better.

Seriously?  All of that high-pitched "tink tink tink tink" (like chipping a rock with a pick axe) comes only from the muffer?  :o   Hmmm...is it possible to remove the baffle that makes that sound?  Just curious.

Cheers,
Dave

Get them at the HD shop, they take them off of Brand New bikes & install New & Improved mufflers for people who dont use wrenches.

Dont go in there tellin them you wanna slap their muffler on your rice burner,,
