Title: Adapt passenger back rest for driver
Post by Greg on 05/14/12 at 18:06:39

Has anyone adapted the passenger back rest to work for the driver? I would love to have a back rest but really don't want to spend a lot of money. If there are photos of the work, that would be awesome!

I wonder if it would be easier to find a firm foam block or something to strap down on the passenger's seat.  I'm envisioning a 3-4" tall, padded block that ends at the back of the seat.

Not an adaption of the passenger back rest, but thought I'd throw this out anyway.  I have a Protac driver backrest (www.protac.net) It came with my bike, so I don't know how much they cost, but it doesn't look that difficult, if you are handy (which I assume you are if you want to do something with the passenger one).  Its just round tubing/stock that holds the pad.

Here's the simple bracket that it slides into:  (I can easily take it off or put it on)

I try to avoid any protrusions that interfere with my ability to bail...

Texting while driving is way too popular in this town... :-?...

Thanks folks! I will be removing the rear seat soon (I hope!). The brackets are very simple, aren't they? I will see what I can come up with.

See, I was going to make a post in the thread with the dude airing out his junk about how I wouldn't want to ride like that because I might need to eject but I thought it was stupid and I'd be the only one who felt the need to jump up and off in a moment's notice.

So...you're telling me you don't text while riding your scooter? I thought everyone did that!  ::)

... could still be stupid... I'm known for it... :-?...
...but, at least we agree... ;D...

I have a history of needing to bail-out,.. so I prepare for it... :-?...

All of the motorcycle safety articles I've seen talk about braking until the moment of impact as the most reliable way to reduce impact velocity.  If you have time to bail, you have time to brake.

Or is there another scenario that doesn't fit in the above?

I've seen one video where a guy was rear ended.  He had a trunk behind him which kept him on the bike.  Pretty much saved him from landing on the hood of the car and possibly the windshield.  Although I would like to hear from him how his back was after the impact.

And my own rear ender with a truck, which pancaked me on the grill fortunately.  If I had the box on the back, I may have been able to hang on.

I witnessed an accident where the passenger was kept on the bike due to the back rest as it flipped end over end. The driver was thrown clear. He was walking with a limp. She left on a helicopter not expected to live.

This type of discussion will go on forever. Just like full face helmets can break your neck if you land on the pavement the right way or seat belts in cars can kill you if the planets are in alignment. Weigh the risks and make a decision. I don't think any decision is right or wrong.

There is a point when instinct overcomes logic...
When you're in a accident, you won't be doing anything you planned...
You'll just do, what you do...
Bailing is what I do,... (years of riding dirt)...
It's served me well so far...
Sometimes it's better to try to fly, than hit what you are facing...
It's the sudden stop that will kill you... flying scrubs off speed...
I was t-boned by a 4x4 truck 2 years ago,... and walked away.  No broken bones...
;)...

Watch GP racers go down at 100+mph,... they bail, and scrub off speed... and rarely get injured... The injuries come when they can't slide, and contact a solid object...

When I was in High school a couple of classmates were riding 2 up and were rear ended by some drunk university students going 90 as they pulled out onto the road at a curve. There was no sissy bar. The passenger, Kyle, went strait through the windshield, the car, and the rear window and was killed instantly. The driver, Glenn, was thrown backwards over the car and spent 2 months recuperating. If there had been a sissy bar, Kyle would have probably survived.
