Title: problem after problem
Post by thumper on 05/10/12 at 10:03:56

ok where to start. some of you might remember my posts of having to put on new rings, then the problem of my cylinder and piston being so gouged up that i would have to bore it over. well here we are now, lol. i decided to pull the entire top end off of a 97 that we had laying around and using it on my oh so problem filled 04. so the day before yesterday i decided it was time to do the switch, i pulled the motor to the 97, pulled the motor to the 04, and switched everything over, it was going so unbelievably smooth that something had to go wrong, and i was right lol. i put it all together and tried to start it and something was wrong from the get go :'( so pulled it back apart and seen that the cam chain looked to be so stretched that the plunger had over exteded and fallen apart in the case. now, i know that i would have to get another chain or do the extension mod to the plunger, but when i pulled the 04 apart it wasnt at all like that, it was worn a bit but no where near that much. what happend? its been driving me nuts. i drove the bike with that crap cylinder for about 100 miles with no problem with the chain, and even pulled it apart and it looked fine, but as soon as made the switch and tried to start the motor it did this. am i missing something? is the top end of the 04 a different size as the 97? its just aggravating to spend 15 hours working on this just for it to crap out on the first turn over. thanks all

Don't know if there is any difference. What I do know is that Murphy lived in my hip pocket for many years. Looks like he is with you these days. Take your time, get it all sorted and then enjoy. Ride safe, far, and often.
