Title: Joined the Moped Army
Post by Bubba on 05/09/12 at 09:21:01

I've been gone from the forum a few weeks...bought a '78 peugeot moped and have been working on getting running...well it runs...but now I'm getting it running more better...haha

joined a forum called moped army...these things are fun and addictive...unfortunately here in Colorado the government has taken the fun out of anything fun so you have to:

1) have a license
2) get it registered
3) to get it registered you have to have insurance on it
4) ride it like a real motor vehicle...

back in the old days we could just do anything stupid and it was our own darn fault but I guess things change...oh well

My daughter is using it to cruise around the neighborhood so we're officially riding "dirty"...
I told her to cry if a cop stops her and then pedal it home...

here is a vid I found on youtube showing what folks are doing with these old things...

I was expecting a video about a group of armed, marauding, evil doers riding around on mopeds terrorizing small midwestern towns.

I love mopeds and have wanted one since I was a kid...hmm, maybe this year. I have been looking at the Honda Rebel 50cc model.

i think its 50cc and cant go over 30mph
but must have a dirvers license
thumperclone is 86cc.licensed and insured cant remember, bout $30 year for both

yeah, I checked with DMV...you don't have to have a plate but you do need a drovers license. Then ya have to register the darn thing...then to get a registration you have to prove you have insurance on it.

Progressive has always been good to me but it's odd to me that my savage cost 109.00 a year and the tiny little moped costs 98 bucks/yr...heck the thing only costs me 250.00

I'd hate to get pulled over running to the store and have a 500 dollar ticket...then it wouldn't seem like so much fun...

just got my plate renewal on thumperclone
tax value $1345.00 is lil less than what i paid in 04 brand new
tag fee $49.90 ouch.. >:(
dont understand their rates my 01 pop up camper has a tax value of $7880.00 with a tag fee of $75.74
few cents more than $25 dollar difference in tag fees but a tax value difference of over $6500.00
maybe estimated yearly road usage estimate is the difference..

A lot of your insurance costs are due to state fees.  I just got insurance on my Savage from Progressive and I paid $220 for the year.  My agent told me the sad thing was that $125 of that was Michigan state fees.

Some of those puppies haul! How fast are willing to go on a moped. seems a little light and squirrelly to me.

Around here the do not even know what a Moped is. I stopped at the local Moped store and not a single thing with peddles. I told the sales lady to look up moped in the dictionary, and walked out.

You're right of course, I doubt if they even make mopeds anymore. There are little gas or electric motors available for bicycles these days.

Over the years the word 'moped' has become synonomous with any scooter of 50cc's or less.

Post by Bubba on 05/12/12 at 07:13:00

yes, most folks don't know what they are. TOMOS still makes them I think and the mopeders really dislike the "scooters"...they call them toilets...haha

Yup, mopeds/scooters are GREAT!

With today's gas prices and complex modern lifestyle
small simple bikes are one of the last refuges of sane
functionality; The classic vespas are cool, the modern
400-500cc scoots are amazing and the honda cub
and original monkey are THE best ever.

This one is one of mine, it's just an old 2-stroke Hercules
50 to 70cc project that runs like hell on wheels (top speed
around 110kmh/65mph) it's completely illegal cause it's
just supposed to be able to go 45kmh/30mph) so registering
it is out of the question, as is insurance, but who cares.

I just use it for fun in the forest/fields sometimes and
take it to festivals, fairs, bikerfests and places where
i know the cops won't control paperwork, hehe.

this is my other, street legal/registered, scooter
(but after messing with the carb, exhaust and
pulley it now also goes waaay faster that it's
supposed to go; this one goes about 50mph)
...last month I took off the "rally" decals, now its all black!  :D

Check out this little gem:
http://austin.craigslist.org/mcy/3014672227.html

I'd go pick it up if I wasn't already full up on bikes.  A good problem to have.  I am digging the Vino scooter.  It just needs a little maintenance and minor crash damage repair and it'll be good as new.  I discovered I can put a 12-pack of beer on the floorboard, whereas on a motorcycle I usually only carry a 6-pack in my man-purse.  So the scooter will pay for itself in no time!  8-)

850 seems a bit steep...I picked mine up for 250...took me 10-15 minutes to get it running. I think the guy that sold it to me didn't have his starting procedure down.
I put on a new carb, petcock, headlight, fuel line, brake cables, throttle cable, choke cable and I was only into it for 350 total...
