Title: It wonders me...

Why do motorcycles rust if stored outside but cars don"t? I bought a cover for my Savage but I am lucky to remember to close the windows in my van.

m/c's are toy's
cars are tools.

You should take better care of your toys.   8-)

Since I am not a handyman my next question might seem silly, but here goes...

I have a large slab of cement/patio on the rear of my house. If I were to get something like a carport placed on it would that be adequate weather protection? Or would I need walls?

Mine's just under a carport... it's 15yrs old and looks fine... ;)...

Here,.. it's the sun more than rain that kills...

A carport would help a lot... enclosed would be better...

You don't really use yer' dining room that much,.. do you?...  :-?...

A roof beats nothing,, but nothin beats a closed in room,,
if the wind blows the rain in, it mite as well be outside.,but the shade on the rubber stuff, well,, paint too,, that helps,
Start with thr top, & work on the walls later?>

Funny you mention that. I told my buddy that I may get rid of the table in the kitchen and park it in there over the winter.  :D

Here is the problem in my part of the country.....and having lived up in your area once I believe you may have the same problem.

Here in Kentucky we get weather that gets cold...really cold sometimes.  The things that are left outside, or in my uninsulated pole barn get very cold as well when the weather is cold.  Then a few days later we get weather that turns 40 degrees and rainy....and all that moisture condensus on the cold metal and the things start to rust when they have 100 percent humidity.  Covers on equipment only makes things worse as they don't dry out well.  Sometimes I can go into my pole barn after one of these cold spells and the floor is dry - then if I open the big sliding door to get the tractor out the moist air will come in and condense on the cold concrete floor and before long the floor is soaking wet.

I know its gonna sound Stewpid ( But that has really never stopped ME!)
cuz when its Cold, a good breeze isnt what people are looking for, but maybe a fan would help.. IDK,, its a thot, I do know one thing,, an air conditioner will pull moisture out of the air, A guy on another forum was gonna buy a dehumidifier,, I told him that was kinda silly, he could get an AC that would cool a room AND pull water.. he did, Now, for all I know, a dehumidifier will pull 10 gallons for a dollar & an ac mite pull 1 gallon for 10 dollars,, so,, if its a real problem for ya, you mite consider these options. Or, maybe leave the door to the barn cracked so it doesnt develop such an extreme difference?

Like realizing ya left your camera gear in the car & now its 20 degrees,, you cant bring it in,, cuz itll get all loaded up with condensation,,

I use both, a carport and a fully enclosed building.
When under the carport a tarp is placed over her
and kept held down with bungie cords.
When weather is going to be really cold she goes into
full hybernation.
She has been kept under the carport for 3 of her 5
years as enclosed building was completed just 2 years
ago. She has weathered well and starts right up.. :)

Humidity is a problem here in eastern NC as well.  I used to have problems with my tools rusting in the box.  Someone told me to put a charcoal briquet in there and it would absorb the moisture.  Seems to be working.

I'd like a car port overhang attached to my garage. Not sure how zoning would feel about it. Or my neighbors. It doesn't have walls - doesn't that exclude it from being classified as a "structure"?

Yeah, that's something I want to do eventually too.  Unfortunately, it's a little ways down the list of priorities when it comes to budgeting, so I keep the Savage in the garage and the mini-suv in the driveway.  It's been that way long enough that more stuff has now been stored in the garage and I could probably never swap them back.

Nope.....it is a structure.  Our Zoning Code defines an accessory structure as anything that:  Serves the Principal use, contributes to the comfort, convenience or necessity of the occupants of the principal use, is located on the same lot, and is of a size such that the projected area in any vertical plane is greater than 15 square feet or has a total area greater than 36 square feet.  If it is greater than 100 square feet in area......it has to be constructed in compliance with the State Building Code.
