Title: Bike starting hard...
Post by Ramsforever on 05/08/12 at 12:34:31

Have to full choke it, have to keep the starter going way too long...

Have used Sea Faom, is it a plug?

Temp around here is 40-60 on the avg.

Bike is four years old.

First start, or even after its warmed up?  Weak battery would be my first guess.... how old is it?

Battery is only a year + old.

Trust me, it takes a while to get it running. So I am gratefull for the juice.

Once I get it running, I need full choke for 20 secs or so.. then go to min choke... Once I am on the road/freeway it's fine on no choke.

It was never like this before. I am going to try changing the plug.

I would start with a new plug like you mentioned.

On single cylinder 4 strokes, valve clearance issues are characterized by hard starting.  I doubt that is the problem on a 4 yr old bike, but I wouldnt rule it out also.

Try to Your battery a charge, I had the same problem, and charged y battery and it was good to go.
I put it on an auto shut off trickle charger when I notice it doing that on start up

I was having the same "issue" and found out the problem wasn't the battery, starter, choke or fuel..........It was the OPERATOR!  With full choke, I was also twisting the throttle wide open.  Thanks to someone on this board, who is obviously much smarter than me, told me to to leave the throttle alone.  Sure enough, the beast comes to life within a few seconds.
It's been 45 -65 degrees around here  and 500' elevation.

I have a guy looking at it. He thought it was a valve issue when he heard how it runs. And after taking things apart, the valves seem fine. Now he thinks it may be the cam chain tensioner.

Should know in a day or two.

You have a guy looking at it.   You aren't paying him to experiment on your bike are you?

We have LOTS and LOTS of issues each year caused by inexperienced Savage dealership technicians, so much so we keep a thread about in the Tech Section.   Repairmen at dealerships come and go with the seasons and the one looking at your bike has OBVIOUSLY never dealt with a Savage before .....

It's not a dealership.

Bike is a 2007 with 49,000 miles. I am a freeway driver.

Used Sea Foam a few times. Why?

well with 49k on it, you should look at the cam chain tensioner.

clean the carb, change the plug, might be the jetting  all depends on the mods you've done already.

I have made no mods.

Should of adjusted the valves, but never did.

Will let you know about the cam chain soon.

Probably 150-200 miles...

Turns out the Cam tensioner was broke.

I have a hole burnt through one of the valves. The pistion rings are fried, and the cylyinder has burn marks.

I think the mistake I made was when I bought it.

The dealer said it should be fine for 100 miles a freeway driving a day.

I should have adjusted the valves when I was supposed to.

Live and learn.

It was a nice bike, but not worth the $1000-$1500 to fix it.

Peace out brothers!  :)

I am sure I need a bigger bike for my travels to work.

And the kicker.... this happend after my extended 4 year warrenty  :-[

I did get 50,000 miles out of it without any major adjustments. I guess I should be grateful.
