Title: Fueling questions
Post by paul33329 on 05/06/12 at 17:18:00

I've seen several people say that regular 87 octane gas is fine.  However, here in Wyoming and at least part of Colorado regular gas is 85 octane.  Mid grade I've seen from 87 to 91.  Is 85 ok?  Does it warm up better on cold mornings with a certain octane.  Probably not relevant, but I'm not very mechanically knowledgeable.

I got 48 mpg for my first three tanks.  Then I put in 89 octane and got 48 mpg again, but the next tank with 87 my mpg jumped to 68!  I suspect this had more to do with the kind of driving.  Rather than little 5 minute drives and traffic lights the 68 mpg ride was only two starts and mostly driving in the mountains 30 to 50 mph with no stops.

Last question.  How do you make fuelly show up on my signiture?

ps,  Thanks to those who answered my earlier questions.  I adjusted the shocks and am much happier with the ride and having a manual on my smart phone is great.

owners manual says 87 min.
but as long as it's not pinging, I think 85 is acceptable.

some have said, regular sits too long, you might ask your station how much gas he sells and how big his tanks are.

like anything else, to get the best fuel mileage, drive steady.

Run the 85. If it starts pinging run the 87.

As for the Fuelly "Badge" instructions are here: http://www.fuelly.com/faq/23/Fuelly-forum-signature-badge

I believe I used the HTML code and it worked just fine.

I've never heard that. I don't know anybody that runs hi-test for no reason. Also, mid-grade is a mix of regular and hi-test so if someone gets mid-grade, they're using the regular tank.

The Moto Guzzi I had required Premium, the guy I bought it from ( Mike @ MPH cycles in Houston, He is a very well known dealer, very good mechanic & excellent reputation. In fact, I could got one from Oklahoma, less $$, shorter ride, but his reputation is so good, I spent another $500.00 to get mine from him)
Anyway,, he told me I could run regular, just dont accelerate hard, dont let it ping,

If any gas sits, its premium.,

Just dont Pin its Ears back & 85 will do ya just fine,, its really a crude old design. Im kinda shocked it doesnt have pushrods.

I've often wondered how much gas we get out of the hose at the grade the last person selected, before we get what we selected.  I'm betting that from the valve in the pump to the nozzle is over a gallon. :(

PLumbing comes up under the Big Box, goes to a header & thru a filter, then to the "Computer" which is a mechanical gizmo that measures flow & spins the dials to show what youre buying & spending,, all digital displays now.,then up & outta the hose,, If you want premium & dont wanna pay the price, sit & wait till someone runs it, then when you buy regular, the first gallon is surely gonna be premium,I bet youre right about that,if not a whole gallon,, its gotta be close,

I once asked the attendant at the station down the street from me, (where I usually fill up my bike) and they said they rarely sell much premium at all!  I figure the regular has to be fresher!

Filled up there yesterday, I know I'm going to get better mileage from this tank cause Hubby fills my tank fuller than I do...  8-)

I'm also in Cheyenne, and 85 works just fine at altitude.   Some places at elevations under 5,000 feet, like the Black Hills, where I was just hunting turkeys, only have 87, but 85 is fine at 6,000 feet, with no engine knock.  I get no discernable improvement of any kind with 87 or 91 octane fuel at this elevation in this bike, even though  I thought 91 octane fuel was better in two-stroke motocross bikes when I was looking for every kind of extra speed at 10,000 plus RPMs 20 years ago.

I like that one !
And any tank you are checking mpg, when you fill up, just don't fill it very full when you get back..
Or if held held 2.3, just call it 2.0 as close enuff.
Or do like the 2 old guys did that bought identical cars,.....or was it motorcycles, but one got a lot better mpg than the other,..........Oh never mind,... wouldn't want to offend anyone !! ::)
