Title: Lube clutch/brake cable
Post by Greg on 05/06/12 at 06:55:10

I have read that this is a often ignored item. I have also read that some cables/jackets have magic schmootz on them and you shouldn't add any lube. Does the 2002 Savage have regular or magical cables?

On my vstar I lubed them every spring and never had a problem.I have not had the s40 long enough to need to lube them.

On my ls 400 I wash them in solvent and lubed every spring and never had a problem.

While I was waiting through the pull downs on the cover, I also did the baggie trick to heavy gear oil lube my clutch cable.  I also pulled the drain plug on the engine to make sure I didn't have any solvent contamination in the sump from all the cleaning & spraying.
(I did, a half cup of thin runny oily stuff came out on the floor)

The baggie trick can lube a cable in place (no removal is necessary).

I live in a very sandy enviroment where lubing your cables with oil will cause them to wear faster. I prefer Teflon chainsaver/cable lube & this little $10 cable lube tool. You can flush with parts cleaner & then lube with your favorite lube. Makes a messy job much quicker & easier. 8-)
