Title: neutral light gone, shut down on kick stand drop
Post by myxomatosis on 05/05/12 at 19:46:55

hey guys, I just rejeted my savage, it runs like a dream now! it starts with no choke just like it did when I first got it in phoenix.

however, I pulled into school the other day and my neutral light wont come on when I put it into neutral, and the engine shuts off when I put down the kick stand in neutral, and the bike wont start at all unless i put up the kick stand first - all stuff it did not do before.
I am kinda at a loss.. it is in neutral with no engine engaged, the gears shift normally when i ride it, but is acting like its still in gear otherwise when its in neutral.. any ideas? I cant start my bike without sitting on it first now  :'(

probably pulled the neutral wire loose.
pop off the tank and give her a look
blue wire with a black cover.

I guess it won't start w/o the kickstand up either.

That is very possible, I did have the tank off.. Thanks I will check that asap. To clarify it is a wire coming from the underside of the speedo?

Bad news. I took off my tank and took out my battery box, the wire looks solid from the engine to the back of the speedo, no breaks or disconnections or pinches.. :( does that mean I need to take off the engine cover to check where the wire goes in, or would possibly the neutral light burning out cause the same thing? I would much rather replace a light bulb..

The wire to the tranny connects to a switch that goes to ground.
Pretty easy to check out if you got a ohm meter or a continuity light.

put it in neutral... light on
put it in gear... light off.

More troublesome is the other end of the circuit.  So check that 1st.

here is the wire, and I traced it from the speedo to the engine

I can work on bikes but I have never done electrical, can you tell me exactly what I need to check and where to put the posts on the electrical meter? do I need to take the cover of the engine off where the wire goes in to check the insides?

disconnect the connector at the top.
put the meter on ohms (pick a low Xnumber)
put one probe in the connector (doesn't matter which one)
and the other to any unpainted metal surface, such as a bolt on the engine.

should display a low number when in neutral and a high number (might even flash) in gear.

i think i found the problem, this connection to the motor is loose.
Thank you for the help, I found it by checking the wires like you said with the volt meter. looks like I am going to have to take the cover off and see whats going on

LDoes anyone know what to expect with this wire? What it connects to, and will I have to remove my pipes to get the engine cover off?

so its a ground? as in no need to pull off the cover, just attach it to the frame? I just changed the gasket on my exhaust, I really would love not having to pull off the pipes to open the cover

this is the blue neutral wire that is loose, is this just a ground?

It is not just a ground. As the wiring diagram shows, there is a switch between the wire and the ground. If you tie the wire directly to ground, I'm guessing that the bike will think that it's always in neutral. (I'm only looking at the diagram versy posted.)

As a check for the problem - ground that loose wire and see if the neutral light comes on.  If it does - then you will confirm that going inside and fixing the loose wire is the correct repair.

If you just ground the wire.....the neutral light will stay on all the time.

Yes thanks I did more research found out about the neutral switch. I already ordered a new one, just have to take the cover off and maybe loose my gasket in the process. Thank you everyone for the help

Don't lose the little post in the switch under the cover. It's very small and can drop off before you see it.
