Title: Raptor Petcock leak
Post by Savage 1987 on 05/05/12 at 17:42:18

So I am nearing the final few days of my RYCA build I had the bike running today.  It ran briefly but now I can't start it back up.  I am in the process of trouble shooting that problem.

The question I have for all of you is that I notice gas leaking from around the two screws on my Raptor Petcock...So I replace the two screws with new stainless ones each with a soft o-ring.  I was hoping that the o-ring would create a tight seal around the screw head, but I was wrong.  It still leaks.

Has anyone had a problem like this?

Here are some of my thoughts about the issue:
-Maybe it has something to do with when I had the tank painted?  Paint got in the threads of the petcock mounting holes.  It doesn't seem that would matter, but its just a thought.

-Maybe I should try a metal washer, instead of a soft o-ring, with the screws. the stock screws had metal washers and it was still leaking.

-Maybe the seal on the Raptor that goes up against the outside bottom of the tank is bad?  It didn't appear to be damaged at all.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks.

Drain the tank, pull the petcock, inspect the surface the O ring seats on, inspect the O ring. Inspect ever ah thang!

I can't remember if on the stock tank with factory paint job if the footprint of where the petcock mounts to the underside of the tank is painted.  Should that oval area be painted or bare metal?

I thought it was one big oval oring around the entire sealing surface, not 2 orings around the screws.  Could that be the problem?

If your painted area is flat & the paint isnt looking "attacked",, I guess its okay,,

On the side of the petcock that touches the tank there is an oval o-ring.  I added two round o-rings between the screw and the petcock because the gasoline was leaking from screw holes.

Maybe I need to torque the thing a little tighter.

Does anyone have toque specs on the screws that mount the petcock to the tank?

Thats just a little bolt, shouldnt need to be too tight, thats what the O-ring is for, I cant remember anyone else having this problem,,
Can you pop a website up that has a pic of the petcock you have?

You can see the o ring that is supposed to create the seal. This is puzzling.

Maybe I grabbed the wrong two screws and they seem like they fit but they are actually too small. That could explain how gas is leaking around the threads and down to the screw head.

Have you got the petcock out?

The screws are supposed to have a sealing washer too.

Like the ones on the case?

Verslagen, you are correct, the stock screws have a sealing washer. see pictures below.  Stock screws with metal washers are on the left and the new replacement screws with the soft o-rings are on the right. Also note that the metal washers on the stock screws do not come off, they can move freely, but the can't be taken off the shaft.

I would be inclined to try the new screws with metal sealing washers but I figured since the stock screws with metal sealing washers were leaking, there is no point.  The failure is probably with the petcock or tank hole.  Does anyone agree?

I tried to get a pic of the underside of the tank too but it's difficult angle.

metal sealing washers like the ones on the case will work much better.

those on the left were sealed different... looky all the rust, they were sealed on the threads.

I knew that rust on the stock screws seemed a bit fishy!

That must have been the previous owner because this is the first time I have had any of these pieces apart.

Verslagen what washers on the case are you referring to?

Also, this is an amateur question, are sealing washers different than a standard washer?  (Thicker, thinner, softer, harder)

Should I be looking for a certain type of material for instance copper, brass, stainless steel?

Thanks.

Should I use some type of sealant on the threads in addition to the washer?

The only thing I have used on threads is locker or anti seize...I don't have much experience with any sealants. Any recommended products?

Make sure the area between bolts & the petcock pickup hole makes a good flat landing for that short run of O-ring.

I think they really should have built the tank so the petcock bolts went up into blind pockets.

Well, I bought another set of bolts to mount the petcock.  These ones are hex head with a washer built in.  I also put some Permatex thread sealant, rated for contact with gasoline, on the threads.  The tank has been holding fuel all day without leaks.

Thanks everyone for all the input  8-)

You bet,, & thank your tank for stopping with the output...

I found this a bit puzzling  :-? I just swapped my stock petcock to the Raptor this weekend and mine used 10mm bolts rather than screws...

Don't use my bike as a benchmark.  It has had a few owners before me and it is evident that those owners made changes/repairs/etc.

The Phillips head screws that were holding my factory petcock in place may not have been the ones that the factory installed.

Mine has bolts with phillips screw or 10 mm heads like the battery bolts.

"combo" bolts with a sealing washer.

Best of both worlds!

I found with the Raptor, the angle at which a Phillips screwdriver connects is slightly awkward limiting the amount of torque you can deliver.  (Even though not much is needed)
I ended up ditching the Phillips screws shown in the previous pictures and went with a 10mm hex head with washer.
