Title: Can I swap a 4 speed gearbox for a 5 speed?
Post by paulmarshall on 05/05/12 at 12:51:42

Hi, I have brought  LS650 to replace my current LS400. Both appear to be same in spec except the bore and stroke. The 400 has a 5 speed and the 650 has a 4 speed. can the transmission be swapped?
Cheers
Paul

I don't understand the huge draw of the Savage 5 speed over the 4 speed.  There is essentially no difference in the gear ratios of the first gears or of the fourth/fifth gears of the respective units.  Is it just bragging rights that it is a five speed and that a four speed sounds like old technology?

IIRC, the 4 speed has a slightly taller high gear,,

I find myself shifting to 6th anyway.

Hi thanks for your response. The real reason I want to keep my transmission is because the engine number is on the lower part of the engine, and in New Zealand you pay more for a bike over 400cc. Went you go for a WOF in this country the chassis number and the engine number is taken. I will have to re register this as a new bike. Which also means new number plate.$$$$

Well,, that explains a lot, I can sure understand trying to keep it papered as a 400,

The ratios on the 5 speed are closer together between gears than the 4 speed.  The real question is which is more useful in your style of riding. :-/
