Title: Shifting into gears
Post by John on 05/03/12 at 14:22:02

There are times when my "suzie q" doesnt like to shift into 3rd, and times when I have to almost force it into 5th. I'm guessing that's not normal. It doesn't happen often for either one, and the 2nd to 3rd acts like I've shifted, but doesn't actually engage 3rd gear.

Anyone ever encountered this before?

I don't have that happen to me but maybe my experience isn't the norm.

Miles on the bike?

What exactly are you doing when you shift?

Letting RPMs die off, or shifting as quick as you can, like racing? Tried it w/o using the clutch?
Ive done that when it was getting stubborn & it works,.

Check the lever adjustment,... it's usually a foot problem that causes it...

...in particular,... make sure that you are allowing the lever to fully release before trying for the next gear...

I am having similar problems.... i can kick the shifter at the transmisson and it will shift when i bump the shifter.... but mine does it all the time now and it happens in 2nd to 3rd.... it does it in 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th.... there is some kind of misalignment...

Tighten your clutch cable, it has stretched. And go to 15W40 oil. Mine shifted the same way with 10W40 in it, lots of missed shifts.

Justin, I have less than 10k on it. Does that help at all?  Should I still tighten the clutch line?

Adjust the clutch so the lever will move freely some, not a mile, just dont let the lever be holding the cable tight,my lever moves about 1/4 inch at the end with zero effort,

By 10,000 miles it otta be shifting pretty smooove..

i can kick the shifter at the transmisson and it will shift when i bump the shifter....

Is there a chance someone left an E clip off of somethng in there?

Well,, dang,, the problem was there before anyone went in,, Im lost, Bud,, Im sorry, I wish I could help,,

+1 on the cable adjustment, 1/8" minimum to 1/4" and check from full right to full left.  Cables sometimes bind and will throw off adjustment.

+1 on lever adjustment.  That lever on the case should be pointed straight down.  If you're having trouble shifting up, you can take that lever off and shift it a spline or 2 down.

Also check for binding in the lever or rod.  If it doesn't return to the neutral location, it won't reset so you can shift up again.
