Title: Cell phone mount
Post by Greg on 05/03/12 at 10:12:29

Is anyone aware of a cell phone mount that is sturdy AND cheap?

You want to use it for a GPS?

I was originally looking for a GPS mount, but my phone has it built in. Plus I can use it as a clock, trip meter, etc. so I would like to mount my phone.

& youve had a look at all the accessories the manufacturer has for it?

LG doesn't seem to offer much. I am looking online. There are thousands to choose from. I guess I am hoping someone here has some experience with a certain brand and can make a suggestion. I will probably have to drop the "cheap" part of my specifications though.

LG Optimus V

I am looking at some mounts from leadermotorcycle.com. I like the mount. I hate the cradle and the price.

My suggestion, after my iphone found its way to the pavement, is to get a case that comes with a cradle and mount, I have found several on ebay that are in the $20-$30 range which to me seems reasonable when you look at the cost of replacing your phone.

Something like this

I used a small Pelican case and a piece of lexan I had laying around. I'll post a picture up when I get home so long as someone bumps this thread so it says "NEW" so I can remember. Run on sentence is running on.

Here is what you need. Put one one my C50 and one on the wifes 40. Works great.

I use a zipper'd soft case with a clear window.  Velcro'd to the speedo glass (I use a different speedo anyway) on one bike and velcro'd to something I cobbled together that mounts to the handle bar on the other bike.  Both have "emergency" cords tied to the handlebars in case the velcro cuts loose (hasn't happened yet).
I only use my phone for music and emergency calls from CFO (bluetooth in helmet), so I don't need to look at it much.

That is the exact same one I just found after wading through tons of search results! It looks decent and is cheap. You are using them without issue. I guess I will be ordering one. Thanks a bunch!

By the way, there is a different model, the SM032. It comes with a locking bolt so the unit doesn't come off of the mounting plate. From what I understand, it is the same as the GPS032, just with added security.

The one I posted has the screw on the bottom. I would post a pic of it but it is on the bike and I am to lazy to go out there. Well that and it is raining.

I bought this one from amazon for my iphone:

Works really well, but I don't suggest using it if you ride in the rain.

Well, good price on the GPS032...

http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=217605652&sellerid=23860035

I found a review on Amazon of the SM032 mentioned earlier in the thread and the guy didn't like the security mechanism much at all.  Here's part of the review...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/714SJLQVQQL.jpg

Quote:
Not enough plastic around the nut that allows tightening of the screw that secures the holder to the handlebar swivel makes this piece to be likely to break quickly(as in my case) due to tightening or repeated use.

I'll probably go for a magnetic version that sticks to the tank, similar to one of these...

Savage_Rob, I read those reviews. I believe that you are not to keep removing it. It is a once and done deal. Just slip the device from the case at the end of the ride. However, the case and mount can be an eyesore if you don't want to use it that day. I never considered a magnetic one. That is very interesting. Thanks.

And I don't purchase from Buy.com any longer. I don't like when American companies sell to the Japanese, or any other country.

A leather version of the magnetic...

http://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Cell-Lambskin-Magnetic-Motorcycle/dp/B0077C55UY

I've never had any problems with Buy.com.  In fact, I've had very good experiences with them, especially when I've had to return an item.  In each instance they provided a prepaid printable shipping label (I don't recall whether it was FedEx or UPS).  In one case, I wanted a replacement, which they preshipped.  In the other I wanted a refund, which was done as soon as the returned item was received.

Post by Greg on 05/04/12 at 08:36:31

I was looking at that one. I like the idea of "ears" to conform to the shape of the tank.

I never had any problems with Buy.com either. It's just a political boycott.

If I want to remove the case I just unscrew it from the mount, then there is just the handle bar mount. I have never removed the screw as I put a little locktite on it so it did not self remove.

Paraquat, what mount is that?

Title: Re: Cell phone mount
Post by Paraquat on 05/05/12 at 04:29:56

I made it out of some scrap 1/2" aluminum with some stainless bolts, and old Pelican case, and a piece of lexan.
1/2" was overkill but it allowed me to conceal the bolts holding it together on the bars. The case itself is secured to the aluminum with some flat head screws.

Sort of related.. http://amzn.com/B000IZGIA8 Check out the images people have added.

Personally I think it's a terrible idea to put anything on your bike that takes your eyes off the road.. but to each their own.

I ended up with the one pictured below. It wasn't inexpensive, but it is very well made. My phone overheated in in on the 100* days though. So now I just keep my GPS in it. The GPS works better than the navigation app on the phone anyway and it is easier to read.
