Title: Mid Controls
Post by carguyz on 05/01/12 at 09:58:14

Hi All,

I have been looking at the new Ryca Scrambler. I want to build one! The exhaust being up and out of the way would allow for "standard" below-the-engine controls, I would think. Something halfway between the stock forward controls and rearsets.

I haven't tried to sit on a Ryca cafe racer but think that the rearsets would just be too much for my old knees. My son is over 6 feet tall and I think he would feel cramped, also.

Has anybody thought of adding footpegs/controls in the "standard" position? I haven't looked closely at the bike to see how feasible this is. Ground clearance issues? Not going to actually ride off road, just like the Scrambler looks.  The old Honda Scramblers were not really off road bikes, either but sure looked cool.

Ideas, anyone?

I've seen a few here do it... ..but it will require welding and fabing yourself...

(I'm talking here, about mid controls,.. not controlling JOG's noodle)... :-?...

Do you have links to any of the builds? I might be interested in Mid's too, but not about welding. That's why the Ryca kit makes a lot of sense - it's just easier!

Welding is not a problem, I have friends to help with that. Looking for ideas or if someone has actually done this. I'm not too proud to copy.

RYCA's tracker sketches show them using the same rear-set controls that the CS-1 Cafe has, and that makes sense for them; it's fewer parts to manufacture if half the kits are interchangable.

However; I'd look long and hard at their mounting bracket. Seems to me you could easily extend and modify it to move the footpeg position lower and more forward; especially with the exhaust up and out of the way.

If you have the whole thing apart down to the frame anyway; it probably makes more sense to weld something directly onto the frame. That's what my buddy Jay has done to my Roadster, but he's been stingy about sending me pics, so I haven't had any to post. I haven't even seen it myself, but I hope I will be this weekend. If I do I'll get pictures and let you know...

Here's a pic of my bike. Looks like one could use a correctly splined shift lever and connect it directly to the shaft coming out of the transmission. There would be some heating and bending required to clear the alternator cover. I wonder if the shift levers all have the same splines for a given make?

I'm keeping the factory lever pivot, just reversing the linkage. A direct mount lever from say a dirt bike might do the trick to.

I didn't have much luck with the stock one....these are made from scratch, more clearance and better bolt pattern.

That really is nice work.

I've also been thinking about moving my pegs back to a standard bike position.  I purchased left and right pegs, plates, splined lever, brake pedal etc. from a guy parting out a LS40. I plan to rework them so that they will fit roughly where Skeebo has his.  I haven't even started to think out the details yet.  I would like to see pictures showing the details of how Skeebo mounted his.

If it doesn't work out the original ones will go back on.  To be comfortable the seat height will probably need to be higher.

My plan of attack moves the control yoke assembly to Mid. Pegs, side stand and gear lever work as normal. If it doesn't work I can put everything back, But I'm diggin it to much now.

Skeebo - How does the positioning of your controls compare to the Ryca "rear" controls?

How did you mount yours?

Title: Re: Mid Controls
Post by skeebo on 05/05/12 at 09:45:15

I'm using the rear/lower motor mount bolt to locate the control yoke instead of the front /lower motor mount. This moves everything mid and at the same ride height. The advantage is it's quick and easy but your foot peg location is locked in, not much you can do for adjustment.

I know it's tacky using the smog canister brkt. but it was a ready made deal and the goal is to do this quick and see if I like it. The stock brake lever pivot will be perfect I'll rework the arm to undersling the exhaust, straight rod to the rear drum from here.

Repurposed smog canister brkt.

I have the exhaust tacked up, this gives me a better idea what the brake lever will need....I want ride this TOMORROW.....

I see melted rubber on that exhaust,,

It looks pretty close to the tire, theres actually about an inch and a half clearance.....the brake rod passes between the tire and muffler.

Thanks...I've been wanting to do this for a while. My son will be home in a few days and we'll take some pics of us in riding position.

Busy little bracket.......The next set I build I'll start with something like this on both sides.

Exhaust is welded up, muffler supported I need to make up my mind on what pegs I want to use.

Actually, I was thinkin more along the lines of Boot Rubber..
I like the look, Very trim & light looking. These bikes beg for a tidy exhaust, theyre not physically Big enough to carry a chrome cannon around & not look out of balance.

Ok I follow you now, must've been the welding fumes. I was attracted to the size and the slash cut, really nice baffle as well...It has a hurlme davisun part #

How are these mids working out?

Also, what is that HD part # for your muffler?

I've been so busy with other stuff I haven't made any progress. I have the pegs I want, should be able to finish over the weekend. I'll get that part# for ya.

anything going on here?
I dig this set up. I want to move my current pegs and controls back to about where the bottom of the kickstand is when it is folded up.
Does this set up accomplish this?
I was hoping this could happen without making the pegs any wider, and also keeping them symetrical.
Do the peg brackets just rebolt to the frame without any other custom bracketry?
