i have a 1986 savage that has not been running since 2002 and have got it ready to run had it out for a drive but carb needed cleaned badly took carb apart cleaned put it back together exactly the way it was but now when i can get it to run it back fires constantly tried to adjust air fuel but not it does not start at all

carbs are not a strong point for me does any one have an idea of the factory setting for the air fuel mix screw. the plug had been drilled by previous owner. so now have no idea what it should be at
can any one help

That thing is touchy, adjustments are made in 1/8th turns or less. Id screw it in & when it stops, Dont Tighten it, close it with fingertips only on the screwdriver, youre looking to find the bottom, not make it deeper,
Open it 2 to 2&1/2 turns & try it. PLay with it, dont expect the change to be immediate or extreme,

Run Sea Foam thru it, get a tank or 2 of gas thru it, No improvement? Then ya get to go back in & see what crud is in the jets,

The above may be amended/over ridden by any one of several here who really know..
