Title: Cam Chain Adjuster
Post by rl153 on 04/26/12 at 19:36:10

My bike is a 2005,4500 mi. It's running ok. What is the mileage at which I should check the adjuster, and not wait any longer? I think I have to go to a mechanic to do this . Alot of you guys are handier than I am. Thanks.

The procedure really isn't hard.  only pitfall is getting the cover off w/out ripping up the gasket.  so if you have a spare on hand, you're golden.

cam chain life...

Haven't got a lot of new data, but my latest theory is...

And a lot depends on your riding habits, do you ride a lot of short rides(<20), then yes check it at 10k or less.  A lot of long rides (>30) and you'll get in the range of 20k miles out of the chain.  Extremely long rides (>60) and you might get 30k miles.

Listen to your bike, feel it once in a while, know what the normal vibrations feel like, get a mechanic stethoscope and listen to it.

when the plunger is about to fall out, it'll start rapping on the side of the case, just to the rear of the oil filter cover on the top side.  when it starts whacking on the side of the cover, open it up and let the little FN gremlin out.

I think you can do it yourself. Nobody is less machanically minded than me. And I did mine last fall without any problems. Don't be afraid to ask questions here if you run into a problem but its a really straight forward prcedure.

Youll spend so much $$$ having these things maintained in a shop, way too much $$, & ya cant ride while its in the shop, & its not so rare these bikes get killed in a shop. The $$ you save will more than pay for the tools,

Thanks guys for the info. I ride short trips. I see by the chart most people changed theirs after 10k miles. I guess I don't have to worry about it for a while.
