Title: Wife's new bike.
Post by TossingLead on 04/23/12 at 22:01:50

This is the 2000 with about 16,000 miles I picked up for my wife.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n311/JeffC_TEX/Savage2.jpg
It had been setting for about 2 yrs.
I rebuilt the carburetor, charged the battery, changed the oil, replaced the front tire, front brake pads and various bolts/nuts/washers. It fired right up and sounded good. It has a Jardine pipe that I am modifying the baffle to quiet it down a little. Will be opening the case to check the cam chain tensioner after I get it inspected.

Best part I'll have less then $1000.00 in it when all is said and done.

The wife is happy and I'm not out a lot of Dollars.

Did you get any maintenance records? That thing is deep into the "Its cam chain time" mileage,if its done, great,, if its not, it seriously needs looked at,

Yes I plan to look at the cam chain.

That can be an engine destroyer, if youre thinking it should be looked at, it otta get looked at in a right now kinda way,,
Id sure have a chat with the previous owner & ask if that got done, & when,

Love the yellow. Nice ride!

All under 1000$? I can't get over how cheap some things are south of the 49th parallel.

Congratulations  on your Savage

I've got 42,000 miles and working on the third camchain ,  The Versey adjuster  will pay for itself .

If your not over 6 feet tall , then you may  spend more time on the Savage than your wife will , "Its a FUN bike"!!!

What's your other machine ?

:)

If she doesnt have the arms of an orangutan, those bars may be too far forward for her,
If it fits her well,, please dont show her this post.

Alright, got the baffle in fired the bike up sounded good. Ran for about five minutes then noticed that the seal in the head was leaking oil. So it looks like it needs a new seal. Will check the cam chain tensioner at the same time. Also need to bump the jets up it running lean.

Ordered a Verslavy Tensioner Assy and oil plug should be in this weekend. Took a look at oneluger's baffle mod and copied it and added a little. Will be wrapping the back half with fiberglass this should quiet it down a little more for the wife. This is the link to oneluger's mod

Got the Bike on the road today I put about 60 mls on it no problems no oil leaks. The valve chain tensioner will be in Tuesday.  Wife did ride it around the parking lot some. She took her class last weekend and got her license Tuesday, She's still green.

I stopped riding when I got married, well,, I didnt have a bike then, I just didnt get another one after we married. I got one, finally, in 05, after almost 25 years of not riding,, When I sat on it to take it home, I almost couldnt make myself ride away,, I was scared stiff.. I got out of traffic as quick as possible & didnt ride it to town for a couple of months. Just country roads,, I was still skittish as heck around cars for months, after I finally decided I could handle traffic.

All that, to say this. Let her grow at her own pace. Riding needs to be pleasant, or thers no reason to ride,
When my girl would go for a ride I would ride behind her, so I wouldnt hit a corner at a speed she mite try to match. I didnt want her to feel like I was hurrying her, I stayed back about 1/2 a block. Its nice to go for a ride & meet somewhere, like a park, or a place to eat, that was fun,,

Wife said she needed more light a while riding at night. Bought some front turn signal mounts and some lights. Worked out great..

Nifty way of mounting up those driving lights  :)

I am curious as to how that will effect the voltage system on the bike though, I am in the understanding that we don't have too many extra amps or volts to play with.  :(

Have not had seen or had any trouble with the charging system.

The savage can keep up with 2 55/60 w bulbs, but probably not 3.
It would depend on your circumstances though.

That looks pretty decent. Tell her to enjoy it, and like Justin said, tell her there is no hurry.

I didnt quiet down my jardine slip on any cause I like the sound, but I can tell ya about the jetting that I did that helped ALOT with the bikes backfire/afterfire on accel & dacel & shut off. I put in a needle from a dyno jet kit and put the eclip on the 4th setting down with 1 washer below the clip & two above it( the jets suck tho) so I replaced them with a mikuni 55 pilot and a mikuni 155 main and cleaned my TEV real good. I have my air mixture screw at 1.5 turns out. Now it crackles alittle (not loud) on decel like it should none while upshifting & no after fire at shut off.   :)

Wife has put a ~500 mls on it, last trip being the longest 110 mls. one way.
I think the jetting is OK no popping and 55 MPG, so I will leave it along for now.

Hummm...How much more can we push the amps?  I want to put speaks on the handlebars and an amp to add some tunes.

And, OP nice bike!

I see adding music to a motorcycle as the same thing as hauling a TV to a campsite.,,
