Title: Dyna Doesn't Fit Properly
Post by Fish on 04/21/12 at 12:16:39

I have had this Dyna stamped with part # 64941-01 sitting around forever now. I figured that since I have my exhaust apart I might try putting it on. Isn't it supposed to butt all the way up to that ring on on the header?

It doesn't seem to want to fit:
This is as close as it gets up there

This part of the header makes contact with the inside of the Dyna

This ring inside is where the part of the header contacts the Dyna, the muffler seems to taper to a smaller diameter past that.

I've read about several people installing Dynas, I've never seen anyone have this problem.
What gives?

does look like it tapers down a bit.

cut up a beer can and wrap a couple layers  on it.

All dynas are loose on the header pipe -- we all have had to deal with this.

Some made a size adapter at a muffler shop

Some wrap beer can material around it to make up the difference

Some collapse the Dyna's female end by removing the interlock on the slots and also making the slot a little bit wider (the dyna can collapse more that way).  This solution requires a GOOD CLAMP with lots of range.

I had the exact same problem when I installed the Dyna on my 2001. I cut a little off of the header pipe so it would go in the muffler all the way to the larger ring. Still did not like the loose fit and having to mess with various shims so I went to the local muffler shop with the Dyna muffler and the header pipe and had a small adapter pipe made with a good fit on muffler and header pipe (about 4" long). Cost $5.00. I then used two good quality Harley type clamps which made a snug fit with no leaks. I installed a 7" chrome heat shield purchased on eBay.

Pay attention to the vent tube on the battery if you do any cutting or grinding on the header,, they really do make hydrogen & it really is explosive & you really, really dont want that mess to clean up,,\

TRust me, I know,

Good lookin' out, thanks for the advice Justin.

My vent tube is in a storage box, I switched to an AGM battery when the last one died out.
