Title: Road Trip!
Post by Dave on 04/18/12 at 06:12:18

I just committed to buy a 2007 S40 with only 260 miles on it.  It is a 12 hour trip from Kentucky to New York to pick up the bike.....and I will probably drive up on a Friday and back on Saturday.

I will be taking a small enclosed trailer that I haul my trials motorcycle in.  The trailer is 48" tall, 39" wide, and 8 foot long inside.  I imagine I will have to take off the mirrors to make the bike fit inside.  Can anyone tell me how tall and long the S40 is?  The bike owner is currently not at home and cannot measure the bike for me.

Here is a picture of my "rig".

Take some allen wrenches along, if it turns out to be too tall, loosen the handlebars and rotate them down.

I bought the trailer from a fellow that hauled "show rabbits" all over the country.  The good news is the rabbits were in cages and the floor was pretty clean when I got it.

No really......show rabbits.  They were Netherland Dwarfs.

The funny thing was the little stickers in the shape of a bunny that he put on the side of the trailer when he would wi a trophy.....kind of like the little airplane stickers when a pilot makes a "kill".  It took me hours to peel the hundreds of stickers off the side of the trailer.

Good one!  You guys are sharp!

I was going to leave the sticker that he had placed on the back that read "CAUTION - SHOW RABBITS"....I figured that would pretty much keep the thieves from breaking into the trailer.

I am back with my new bike.  The trip was an adventure......and although I probably made a mistake by buying a bike so far away from home......it is a nice bike and I don't regret having done it.  I traveled a total distance of 1,400 miles, paid $ 50 in bridge and highway tolls, $ 200 in gas, and it took a bit more than 2.5 days.

On the way up I stopped at a place called Bills Old Bike Barn.  The place is filled with old motorcycle and other stuff......only $ 5 for a visit and well worth the money.  It is located along I-80 in Bloomsburg, PA and a good way to spend an hour or more stretching your legs.  Here is a link to the site where you can take a virtual tour: www.billsbikebarn.com

The bike is in great shape an only has 265 mile on it.  It has a Supertrapp muffler installed, and I really have not had a chance to ride it more than up and down the block - hopefully I will get to do that today.  Here is the bike with the original owner seated just before we loaded it up.

I pretty much knew this on the way in......but leaving New York on a Friday afternoon at 4:30 is not a very good idea.  It took me almost 4 hours to get out of New York City.  I only went about 23 miles in the first 3 hours of driving.  Once I got out I drove until about 11:00 and spent the night sleeping next to my new bike in my enclosed trailer.
