Title: Gold pipe (2 new things to worry about)
Post by Buster on 04/17/12 at 11:42:12

Tried researching, but still thought I should ask if my pipe being a slight golden color is a problem if I only have 312 miles on bike. At 222 miles pipe still looked new - 20 miles of riding before cooldowns. Today I rode 90 miles without stopping and just now noticed the pipe color. Running too rich...or just normal and nothing to be concerned about?

And the second thing: While I was looking at the pipe, I noticed a streak of oil on right side of engine from behind fill plug area and running all the way to rear of side cover. Looked like it was just above the oil filter cover so I'm not sure if it came from side cover bolt, bottom of cylinder head or fill plug. Didn't know if oil leak(s) in that general area were common or not.

Check the oil fill, but more likely the filter cover.
Also check the footpeg bolts, torque 'em down.
Oil can seep thru the case into the thru holes when they're loose.

Gold pipe, no problem... blue pipe no problem...
.. unless you don't like the color gold or blue... :-?...

My pipe is a rainbow... ;D...

I personally like the honey color mine once was.  Then I tried a header wrap on it and turned it a less-than-handsome mottled dark blue.  The black ceramic is working though.

The oil is exactly below the "652" on the cylinder and where "Suzuki" lettering meet - oil was actually on top edge of side cover (if I'm calling it by the correct name) and I'm hoping that I just spilled a couple of drops of oil when I topped off my oil and it drifted towards the rear as I was riding. Do the aftermarket metal/aluminum fill caps have better seals?

As for the pipe coloring, I'll stop worrying about it - and thanks for the helpful suggestions again.

Glad to hear this to, mine are starting to turn gold/blue at 357 miles.

So far as the oil is concerned, I would wipe everything down clean, make sure bolts are properly torqued, watch my oil level and keep my eye open for a reoccurrence.

If it happens again, make sure the gasket/ring on the filter cover is seated properly, not pinched, and that it's in good shape.  Had a small leak like this last week.  Took off the filter cover, reseated the gasket, put it back together and no leak.  That leak tended to start below the filter cover though, not above. FWIW.

Tightened the fill cap 1/16-1/8 turn, wiped off leak area and thought it was fixed because all was dry when I arrived at work, but tonight when I got home I noticed it was still leaking. Not as bad as before though. Filter plate is bone dry and only oil I can see is right on top of side cover near the middle and front bolts - right behind fill cap. I'm going to try another cap, because I don't even want to think about the side cover gasket being a problem already. All the nearby bolts are tight.

Know of any good sites that sell an aluminum fill cap? Thanks again.
