My wife and I found this 2011 S40 on craigslist: http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/mcd/2923548585.html
The seller who is not a Suzuki dealer got it as a trade in. He claims it's all original and in perfect condition. Suzuki's web site does not show silver as an available color choice. The dealer, on the other hand, says they only came in silver. I've seen 2011s in two tone but never in silver. I know some dealers will say anything to get you in there so I'd like to make sure it was in fact available before we drive 50 miles to go look at it. Does anybody here know for sure? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A few things. When I bought mine I was told that 2011's only came it two different two-tone paint colors - orange/black and a light silvery blue (can't remember what it was)/white. Also, my eyes might be really bad...but that seat material looks wrong. Looks too smooth. And finally, the exhaust pipe already looks a bit too tarnished for only 200 miles. I'd guess maybe an '09?

I would have to agree that its probably a 2008 or 2009 model at the newest. 2010 and newer are all two tone paint on tanks

In looking at the add IT could be an '11 model... possibly Repainted?... I noticed that both covers Left and right side were missing the S40 badges ....

If it's factory paint it has to be a 2008. Black jug and silver paint combo only available that year. If it's repainted could be 2010 at the newest -- I think Suzuki went back to the silver jug in 2011.

Thanks very much to everyone for taking the time to look at the ad and reply. I didn't even notice the black jug and head not being on the 2011 until you guys pointed that out. Even with 200 miles on it $4800 is too much for a 2006 or 2008. I guess we'll pass on that bike and keep looking.

FYI,
On the frame just above the horn is a factory sticker with the build date of the bike as well as the VIN number. This should help you in the future making a confident purchase.

Testpro -- thanks for pointing out the silver/black jug combo for 2006. Looks like silver was available on and off during the 2000s, but not after 2008 (2002, 2006, 2008). There was a thread on this a long time ago:

Maybe this one is a 2008 that sat around at a dealer until purchased in 2011? Seems unlikely, but who knows? $4800 for a used 08 or 06 S40 seems a bit steep.

I bought my 2009 C50 last spring(2011) still in the crate. $5000. I don't know how long an S40 would stay on the sales floor but they had several C50's leftover.

When I bought my '11 last month the dealer had 2 "new" Honda VT750C2 (Shadow Spirit) for sale - a 2008 with 2 miles on it and a 2009 with 1 mile. I agree - it could have been brand new on a showroom until very recently. Before it was sold and traded back to another dealer.

You could point out the discrepancy & make an offer,, If he is trying to sell something that isnt a 2011 model as a 2011 model,,, well,, Id think that could get him a bind,,He surely knows,, he has the title,,ask to look at it.

The Cincinnati/N. KY area seems to be higher priced on the S40 bikes than other places, and at the moment the selection is limited.

So I went to look at the silver S40 that's on craigslist today. As soon as I saw it I told the dealer that it was not the bike pictured in the ad. He said the guy that does the ads probably just used a generic picture. Well at least the ad guy found a picture of the same model they are selling. I guess the year and color aren't a major concern when selling used bikes.

I think if I was payin someone to do adverts, I would rather then use a pic that actually looks like what Im selling,,
Maybe his mechanics put filters in bakkerds, too..
