Title: Windscreens Post by Starlifter on 04/14/12 at 12:54:31 Windscreen poll...vote and please make comments. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by ALfromN.H. on 04/14/12 at 13:00:40 I have one on each bike. Really like them. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Boule’tard on 04/14/12 at 14:12:47 With the ones I have tried, the buffeting and line-of-sight problems were worse than a clean blast of air. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Serowbot on 04/14/12 at 14:35:53 I'm with Boule',.. ultra buffet sensitive. (I gets me a headache) I prefer a steady wind... Also looks better... My buddy did have a V-Star with a giant windshield once, and it didn't buffet,... but out of about 20 V-Stars, all with fairly big, cop type, shields, only that one bike... So, it's gotta' be really big... (maybe it's my giant head)...(me and Boule' have giant brains, yunno')... :-?... This one... http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/DSCF0142.jpg |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Buster on 04/14/12 at 14:37:16 I picked #1, but it's just a guess. It's the Boulevard version and I love the looks, but haven't been on the road with it yet. Hope to ride 250-300 miles next week. I'll post an update. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by bill67 on 04/14/12 at 19:06:59 I've always had big windscreens and lowers,Makes riding a lot more relaxing to me. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Arizuno on 04/14/12 at 20:58:06 I'm just over 5'7", and my OEM windscreen spills air at just about chin level. Not at all uncomfortable, and I suspect it makes hanging on at freeway speeds less problematic. Lately it's been collecting lots of bugs, which means my chest hasn't. I've never ridden w/o it, so can't really comment on the difference, but overall I like it. I agree the bike'd look better w/o. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by EJID on 04/14/12 at 21:05:08 I've got a 15" Memphis Slim on mine and love it. The bike didn't come with it, and I added it after the first riding season and haven't taken it off since. Actually, I did take if off earlier this year just to feel the difference, and I have to say I prefer having the W/S on especially on the superslab. I felt like I had to hold on for dear life without it, whereas I feel much more comfortable w/o a death grip with the W/S. 8-) http://p1.bikepics.com/2012/03/08/bikepics-2361246-full.jpg |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Serowbot on 04/15/12 at 11:33:21 Windblockers 17,.. Bugeaters 3... Whew!.. We're really gettin' skunked... (Psst... Look over there,.. Steve McQueen, Brando, and Fonda are tearin' up)...:-?... |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by SALB on 04/15/12 at 11:49:10 IF I were to get a windscreen, it would be one of those little flyscreens. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by verslagen1 on 04/15/12 at 12:39:57 I have a big, a medium and a flyscreen. prefer the flyscreen over the others or naked. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by gerald.hughes on 04/15/12 at 13:15:41 Personally, I like the stock s40 windscreen. It is midway between a flyscreen, and a small windshield. http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp223/gerald_hughes/IMG_2745.jpg |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by lukeduck on 04/15/12 at 15:16:44 Got em on all 3 bikes. Look over all of em. Best things since sliced bread. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by youzguyz on 04/15/12 at 15:19:28 Stock S40 windscreen on both bikes. Keeps the wind off my chest, but lets me chew the wind. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/15/12 at 15:39:43 What good is a screen in the wind? Just filters out the bugs.. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Smokestack on 04/15/12 at 18:13:13 Not my bag. Never have been. Wind is sweet. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Savage_Rob on 04/15/12 at 18:16:34 I like mine, especially in winter and when bugs swarm in spring. I like the wind in the summer. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by ZAR on 04/15/12 at 19:33:59 Used to hate the dang things....just like electric starters. Then a weird thing happened......I got older! Or maybe it's the 80 miles a day I ride to work! Anyway,I'm starting to think a windshield might be a nice thing on the scooter, really nice in the Kentucky winters and on the interstate heading to work before sunup! |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by scottnj on 04/15/12 at 20:50:23 I love a windshield at 65 mph or higher on the highway. Prefer no windshield for everything else (most of the riding I do). I have a Memphis Shades sportshield -- pretty big one (20" over the headlight) -- that I really like. Best thing is it takes 30 seconds to put on or take off (quick mounting hardware). When I go to the dragon from Ohio I use the windshield on the trip down and back (300 miles each way @ 70mph). Once there, I take off and leave it at the hotel until it's time to ride back. For me, best of both worlds. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Stimpy - FSO on 04/16/12 at 01:58:14 funny enough I just got one last month but have not installed it yet, I'll post a few pics and commentary here as soon as I test ride it. It's one of those 1/2 shields, sorda like a caferacer canopy, black, my main goal was to create a bug deterrent ...in summer my black shoulders are yeller :-? |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Savage_Rob on 04/16/12 at 06:54:16 On rides that last several hours, a windshield helps to reduce fatigue. In any case. it needs to be properly mounted and adjusted to minimize buffeting and I'm sure some shields are better than others though my only experience with one is with the NC I have now and one of the tiny NC flyscreens. While I found the flyscreen did somewhat reduce the bugs, it did not reduce them nearly as much as a full windshield does and offered little protection otherwise. It might be nice in the summer though. The full shield has also kept me cleaner in the past. I once had an 18-wheeler in front of me that was somehow leaving a mist of diesel fuel behind it. I never saw the source but I know my windshield kept a lot of it off of me. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Bubba on 04/16/12 at 07:45:11 I bought the flyscreen. I like it. doesn't buffet as far as I can tell. I still get plenty of wind in my face just takes some of the pull off my chest. Took me a bit to get the angle where I like it. I have noticed that I don't get quite as many big bug splats on my helmet...guess that why they call it a flyscreen... :) |

Ditto that. Although I do not have a windshield/screen on my Savage at the moment, I would like one. My ideal screen is little below shoulder height, so that I can see the road clearly in the rain or at night (dusty/dirty windscreen will turn milky white from vehicles in the opposing direction shining the lights at it) yet keep the wind off my chest. I've also noticed that many helmets will have different rates of wind rush/noise depending on the type of windscreen, so from that perspective the lower the better. 8-) |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by bill67 on 04/18/12 at 04:28:04 For you that don't like windshields hold your head out the window of you car when you driving and enjoy life. |

Really? So does that mean that those who do like windscreens should stay in the cage? Biggest, least buffetty windscreens on the road are on cars, ya know.... |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by John_D FSO on 04/18/12 at 16:03:34 Got one on my C50, and enjoy it, especially on long rides, or in foul/cold weather. Do miss the (stronger) wind in my face once in a while, but it's only 4 bolts to remove it. P.S. Lowers make a huge difference on reducing buffeting, at least on my full size shield. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by BuckRYCA on 04/18/12 at 20:16:28 National Cycle flyscreen on my Ryca/Savage. Like it. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by CaptialThumper on 04/18/12 at 21:02:11 Tried putting my Spitfire screen on the s40 from my Vino and hated it - too much buffet and too hot in the summer. Thinking of trying a NC fly screen based on the opinions around here. |

Nevertheless... it breaks my heart... Honestly,.. People have no idea, just how fast they are going,... in their cars... with their windshields, air conditioning, cushy seats, sound insulation, stereo DVD players... ...it's like watching a ride in a movie... I've learned from experience,... that if you feel casual and comfortable at 80mph... it's a dangerous illusion... Part of what I love about the Savage,... is it creates no illusions... 80mph... feels real fast... and it is... Ride safe... Serow... (PS,... Bill,... I don't have to hold my head out the window,... I don't ride with a windshield)... it's fast, and I know it.. People should do it,... and learn... ;)... |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Stimpy - FSO on 04/19/12 at 04:03:37 Here ya go, all done, quick install, rides fine (same), no bugs to test on right now cause of rain, visibility was not compromised, instrument panel is now protected and cozy, I originally wanted smoke color but the black one was 50% off, looks fine, well, this of course depends on personal opinion but I just don't see how one can "ruin the looks" of a 125cc from the 90's :D http://s15.postimage.org/bvf5slry3/180420122674.jpg (http://postimage.org/) image hosting (http://postimage.org/) http://s14.postimage.org/3r3dcxqw1/180420122676.jpg (http://postimage.org/) image hosting (http://postimage.org/) http://s11.postimage.org/iqystxtqr/180420122677.jpg (http://postimage.org/) jpg upload (http://postimage.org/) http://s12.postimage.org/e7mk8gm65/180420122682.jpg (http://postimage.org/) image hosting (http://postimage.org/) http://s7.postimage.org/6hdo0dnln/180420122679.jpg (http://postimage.org/) jpg (http://postimage.org/) Oh BTW I just installed a new rear Dunlop 451 (D404 in front) and a DID chain, before this rear I had a Continental but I did not like it at all, wet riding was a disaster and lasted only 3k miles, I'll never buy conti again. Ba-bye now 8-) |

Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Stimpy - FSO on 04/19/12 at 16:24:16 odd, I can see them fine today I stopped using imageshack for pic hosting because it was being weird again and started using another service called postimage.org, maybe I did something wrong with the hot-link embedding code ...mmmm, lemmeesee. Title: Re: Windscreens Post by Fish on 04/22/12 at 07:04:29 I have yet to ride with one. I know that on my 200+ mile trips across the state I'm pretty sure I wanted one. Recently I acquired a stock shield from an S40 but have yet to put it on. I think I only want to use it during long trips and maybe the winter. Seeing as how summer in FL is approaching I want access to all the wind I can get. |
Title: Re: Windscreens Post by gerald.hughes on 04/22/12 at 08:35:45 It seems to me that the most interesting thing about this poll is the last option, "I had one, but no longer do." This category has no votes. Thus, it would seem that once you try a windscreen, you are hooked. |

Nope. It is just that you have to pick one choice over the other. I both "don't have and don't want a windscreen" and "had one but no longer do." If I had a long commute at high speeds in a high-bug area, I might look into them again. I am sure they are great if you hit on one that has just the effect you want, and does not add any problems. For me, no cigar. |
