Title: trouble starting
Post by Nathaniel12345 on 04/11/12 at 15:10:33

Hello, I just recently purchased a 2002 Savage and for some reason im having a very very hard time getting it started. But once It finally does start and the engine warms up, it will fire up quickly. But if i let it sit and cool down, it starts to give me trouble again. I live in south florida so it its never below 65 degrees here and its currently about 80. Ive killed my battery many many times trying to get it started. Im just hoping it isnt something MAJOR. Any type of feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like your electrics are okay,... so start with this...

Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime.. (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1)
;)...

thanks .. i tested it and petcock is ok. The vacuum works fine and it flows freely when on prime. Im not understanding what could cause it to have trouble only when the engine is cool

what's your starting procedure?

many state you can't twist the throttle while starting.

I can twist my throttle,, no sweat,, well,, there IS one drawback,, it wont start,,

lol.. it seems as if mine will ONLY start if i twist the throttle

Just for kicks and giggles. Try cranking your idle adjustment way up. I know my bike idles a lot higher once it's warm. It may be possible that your idle is so low that when it's warm it simply won't keep running.

i tried it. the problem isnt that it wont idle. the problem is that it wont turn over. I try for atleast 10-15 minutes before it will actually crank up

Ive killed my battery many many times trying to get it started.    hmmmmmm ....

So, with a freshly charged battery, it will crank but will not start.

Do you have a volt/ohm meter?

Test battery voltage "as sits" and while cranking -- if voltage drops to 9-10 volts when cranking your battery is defective and that alone will stop the black box from firing the spark plug.

Our black box won't fire unless cranking voltage is clearly over 10 volts while cranking.   All cells must be charged and in good shape.

"Ive killed my battery many many times trying to get it started" likely means your battery isn't in as good a shape as you think it might be.

well thats what i suspected. So, I went and got a brand new AGM Power Sport Battery. And its still the same problem as when I had the Original battery. It doesnt really go below 12 volts while cranking

ive been looking around, and one guy said that bad valve adjustments could cause a bike to give trouble starting when cold, but gets better when the engine warms up. But I wasnt sure if he just wanted to stick me for my money lol

less work is to do this first

quick and dirty is to get a can of ether starting fluid, pull the air filter and give the airbox hole a big big shot of either and then crank the bike quick like to see if you have a fuel issue.   The bike will start and run with no throttle off the ether vapors (momentarily anyway).

if it doesn't even try to start then go for the plug

Clean all the trash from around the spark plug area (bike will suck in sand if you leave any around within range).

Pull the spark plug, put it back on the spark plug wire and carefully ground it to the bare cable from the solenoid (easiest bestus place to clip it in under tension so it doesn't shake loose).  Crank and see if you have a spark ....

Can you elaborate a bit more? When you hit the starter button, can you hear the decomp solenoid click and then the starter turn over?

If it doesn't turn over, that usually points to battery, starter, or bad safety switch (in your case the battery is good). Double-check how you start the bike: in neutral, kickstand up, clutch in should be all the safeties.
If it turns over but doesn't catch, that points to spark plug, battery (again, but not as dead of a battery before), or carb (air/fuel).

If you have some starter fluid (or carb cleaner or brake cleaner) squirt some into the cylinder and then try and start it. If it catches once or twice, carb issues.

ok ill try some starting fluid. i changed the spark plug to a warmer version, hoping that would work

yes i hear the solenoid click.. it turns but just doesnt catch. it may back fire quite a few time and sound like it wants to start. but it falls a little short lol
