Probably worn key... get a new one cut...
I've had that happen with cars, but with them it's a nice feature... on a bike, you don't want o lose it on the road...

PS,.. Rubberside is better for questions...
Somebody will move this post there for ya' in a minute... ;)...

try some grafite. Might be some sticky parts inside if your having trouble with 2 keys.

I'd try getting a new key cut (cause it's cheaper than replacing the lock),... and a new cut key will have sharper edges, even if it's cut from an old rounded one....
Worth a try...

Don't you have a back-up key for the bike? (I always have at least two back-up keys for my bike because I tend to lose them.)  If you do, it should not be as worn.  Give it a try and see if it comes out.

I wouldn't buy a new ignition lock, but I would take it off and take it  to a locksmith. Or, you can ride the bike into the lock shop. (Alternately, you can have a locksmith come to the bike, but it will cost more.)  It sounds like you just have a pin worn or broken.  That is easy for a locksmith to fix.

Hay

Mine does the same thing !

Lost one key ring  while I was long way from home is how I found out (no it wasn't funny)  I had to refill the tank to get home.

I relocated the switch to make gravity my friend  to fix the problem.   the key looks like a arrow head , none of the teeth are lower at the back of the key to hold it in place.   Now the key is at about a 45 degree angle on the top frame piece by the seat.  Just a little hole and screw.

Let us know how it turns out for ya !  :)

Till you get that fixed, Id start it & put the key in my pocket.,

I was debating between gum and a rubber-band until I heard MM's solution...

I'm with Justin. I'd probably turn the bike on and pop the key in my pocket instead...

I'd run a little chain through it and wrap that around the frame. If it falls out at least it will be hangin' there waitin' for ya.

I have orderd a new key useing the number on the key. Ill see what happens with a new key. If it still comes out it must be the lock, yes....

IDK what else is on that keyring, but a heavy set of keys hanging in an ignition will wreck the iggy..

As a locksmith I can tell you this sounds like a worn lock cylinder. What year is it? Mileage? Unfortunately it's often hard to find spare parts for the lock cylinder (pins, springs and housing). Not sure what locksmiths in your country have to say about it, but here in sweden you would be better off ordering a new one in 1 piece.

Getting a new key will normally not fix the problem, even if it's brand new with sharp teeth. The fact of the matter is that every lock wares just as much as the key. Many people have come throuh the store to get a new key made, the day after they come back with the lock because the new key isn't working even though it's cut like it should.

If the key is badly worn it's likely the lock is in the same condition and need repairing.

Bad/worn key = Bad/worn lock.

Bad/worn key = Bad/worn lock.

Gee,,, why does that seem so reasonable?

As reasonable as that sounds. When I picked up my bike the key would turn the bike on and then I'd pull it out and put it in my pocket. I did this for a long time until one day I was in a rush and the key fell out while I was riding. I was incredibly lucky and actually found the key later that day. I took it to a locksmith, he cut a key for me from the code and I've never had a problem with it. That was two years ago next month.

The bike is a 97 LS with about 27K on the clock. Ill try a new key first if that dont work ill fit a new lock. Not an LS one. never had a problem like this before on any bike we have had and seems a problem on the LS as im not the only one

I know, it sounds very reasonable, but from my experience people doesn't seem to understand that's how it is. I'm not saying this is the case in every bad/worn key-situation, but from my years of building locks from scratch, a bad key most often equals a bad lock. I've had hundreds of customers coming back to the shop upset because their new key didn't even work in their old lock, even though I told them the first time that their old key gave me an indication their lock needed repairing.

As greenmonster said, a new key did the trick for him, so sure it's worth a try!

Seems the locksmith was wrong, key worked great. just orderd two more. £7 each so thats about $10 each. Cheeper than a new lock.
Cheers chaps

Bucky?... I know Bucky....
He married into money.  She wasn't much to look at, and was very demanding, but her dad owned a Yugo dealership.
Bucky's now gone bald, added 150lbs, and works as a chicken plucker   ... but he's still married and they were blessed with 19 children... from ages 32 to 2yrs (which is quite a miracle, because Bucky hasn't slept with his wife for 8yrs),.. 17 are still living at home,... the other 2 are in prison for molesting a cat... (they'll be back in 5 months)..
... and he still drives a Yugo... (it's a classic)....

Heck,, we are all about the quickest. cheapest, easiest fix . Glad that worked out for you..

But,, since there really is a guy here who has made a living working on locks,,maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea to either keep a spare on you, or a string on that one,,
You may not always be so Bucky..
