Post by rl153 on 04/05/12 at 10:39:40

I'm am trying to set my tachometer, should I set it for ,spark plug fires twice per revolution, or once per revolution,Thanks!

Our spark plug fires twice per cycle, once at TDC compression stroke and once at TDC exhaust stroke.   The plug fires at Top Dead Center, whenever that occurs.

You're saying twice per revolution, right? I think that answers my question ,Thanks!

Twice per cycle,.. but once per revolution....
That's what was stopping me from replying...

Are they really asking per revolution, or per cycle?... :-?...IDK?...

In the instructions it says per revolution, as in rpm.

Being as its a 4 stroke engine,, it fires twice per cycle, one cycle being all 4 strokes. TDC, always sparks it.. Its cheaper & easier to do it that way. Building it so that it only fires TDC compression would be a pain,

How do they do it on multi cylinder engines? A twin could fire tdc comp & ex, as long as the pistons ran in synch, but what happens when ya have 3?

You guys are saying the plug fires once per revolution, but there are two revolutions per cycle. I think I have to set it at once per revolution. Thanks!

I think these guys confused you, bless their hearts. ;)
Set it for twice per revolution. If the spark was firing twice every time the crank turned once it wouldn't make any sense.

Im just glad you showed UP! Wow,, Its certainly clear now! LMAO..

It fires every time the piston goes up, it does that once every time the crank makes 360 degrees, which is one revolution,

Not if they fired it off the camshaft instead of the crank,........like they used to do.

But curious,....w/ all the valuable info in this thread, ::) did ya ever get it reading correctly ?

What Tach did you use ? I'd like one that fits in the std 2 1/8 hole. Seems like I found one long time ago, but it wouldn't work on a single cyl that fires every revolution.

When the cam is down in the crankcase, thats not such a big deal.

There was thread recently(ish) where people were providing links to tachs they had used successfully, but now I can't seem to find it.

This one works out of the box:
https://www.denniskirk.com/koso-north-america/mini-tachometer.p408812.prd

Search around and you might find it for a few bucks less elsewhere.  I think I paid $52 shipped last week.

Haven't ridden it in the rain yet so I don't know, sorry.  I do really enjoy having it - it's helping me get a sense for good idle settings and where the power band is.  That dial meter looks pretty cool too.
