Title: Bike Security with Kill Switch
Post by heroicseven on 04/04/12 at 09:22:07

The guy I bought my bike from installed a kill switch in place of the ignition.

So essentially I have no key, and no way of thwarting any attempts to flick the kill switch and drive off with my bike.

I'm not very electrically inclined, but it seems to me I should be able to procure just about any keyed ignition, and just swap it out for the switch.

Anybody have experience with wiring the switch/ignition?

Thanks.

I'm thinking something like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ignition-Switch-Universal-Type-Motorcycle-ATV-Auto-/350464116654?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item51994a07ae&vxp=mtr

Looks like it would work to me...but I've never replaced mine before

Seven, take the same circuit he interrupted with his kill switch and put the two wire on-off keyed switch in its place.

Can't be any easier ....

If the stock socket is still attached to the harness, buy a used switch and plug it in.

You could just leave the killswitch on the handlebars switched off.. Youve got no idea how many of us have been "stymied" when we wanted to go for a ride..

go big or go home, right?

since you are already halfway there, go wireless!

I kid, I kid. While I do appreciate the ingenuity of the above mod, and I really like it, it isn't the most practical or simplest way to return security to your bike.

Though, the *simplest* AND cheapest solution you want so someone can't drive off? A lock and chain through the front wheel. Still won't stop them from just picking up and walking off with the bike if they have a buddy though.

call me a conspiracy nut, but I will never use rfid. But as for security, I just dont want some yahoo to see me kill it with the switch and get an idea. A key will be enough of a preventative measure, but if someone wants that bike bad enough they gonna get it. :-X

I actually love the idea of the rfid for our bikes. The people who are swiping stuff with rfid's aren't the same guys who are likely to be swiping our bikes.

passports, credit cards, EZ pass (or whatever quick toll paying scheme your state has), security badges at work all have RFID tags in them. sadly, in this day and age, if you are even mildly involved in society you are going to be tracked or can be tracked.

it is kind of a moot point though, if someone has five minutes alone with your bike it is a goner no matter what. locks can be picked (or the ignition bypassed) RFID tags spoofed, chains cut, bikes picked up and hauled away in a pickup.

my bikes "security" feature is it is darn tricky to get and stay running the first five minutes. good luck with that one. and how is my bike worth all that? half the stock parts are missing!  ;D
