Title: Powdercoated Header pipe Post by SuperSavage on 04/02/12 at 23:21:28 Has anyone powdercoated their header pipe? If so, how has it held up? How does it look? How did you prep it? JohnnyCat |

Title: Re: Powdercoated Header pipe Post by Gyrobob on 04/03/12 at 05:03:18 Powder coating usually won't hack it. There are several kinds of exhaust coatings sorta like powder coating. Here is one: http://www.zircotec.com/page/exhaust_system_coatings/60 |
Title: Re: Powdercoated Header pipe Post by MotoBuddha on 04/03/12 at 05:13:28 Yeah, ceramic coating is the way to go. Powder coating is essentially melted plastic, which can remelt at high temperatures. I sent the pipes from my other bike to Jet-Hot. http://www.jet-hot.com/ http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/motobuddha/a138bacd.jpg There are some areas that look rough because this was a salvaged pipe with some rust pitting. |
Title: Re: Powdercoated Header pipe Post by Bobbert on 04/03/12 at 08:45:46 the easy solution is to buy some spray-on header paint. holds up fine |

Painting over chrome requires the proper surface preparation -- like having it sandblasted -- or else it just rubs or flakes off. |
Title: Re: Powdercoated Header pipe Post by LANCER on 04/03/12 at 10:25:05 Yep. When it comes to painting, coating or plating it's essentially about the prep. It makes all the difference with the final result. |

Quite true, but using BBQ paint from Home Depot won't hold up very long no matter how good the prep. Anything that will hold up under the red hot heat of an exhaust header, and then contract enough to stay stuck when the pipe gets cold, has to be pretty good stuff. It ain't cheap. |
