Title: Highway bars/Generator
Post by Cavie on 04/01/12 at 18:24:50

Has anyone attempted to adapt highway bars from a GZ250 to the S40?? From pictures it looks doable. Anybody have the dimensions of the 250 bars? Height, with and space at the bottom. I wanna build a mini full dress crusier complete with floorboards. Will the generator stand the added load of 100 watt (2-50's) fog lights?

Nope...  You could go to LED running lights/tail light, brake light, and gain a little wattage (don't use load resistors), but I don't think you could get 100 watts...
Maybe 40 to 60?... if you stay off the high beam on yer' headlight?... :-?...

I always thought that the gz front end would look great on 650.

I thought the total wattage output of the Savaage-S40 was 100 watts.?

I know a bunch of little 3 mile trips will not keep the battery charged.  Takes more to run the starter  than gets replaced.

AutoZone has blinker boxes for LEDs that are time controled instead of load controled.

I've gone to LED turns , Stop-Tail , and DayTime Running Light(extra bulb in headlight).   All this to make up for the short trips.

Slightly off topic, but close enough to at least ask - Could one possibly mount and run a a 12 volt alternator or generator off of our drive belt? Perhaps a rubber friction wheel to ride against the top of the belt and possibly mounted to the swing arm in some manner. I've seen some pretty small units in some of the older VW engine compartments and such. I want to use the bike to pull a trailer for camping. Running a 12 volt cooler, charging cell phones, running a GPS unit and several other things that come to mind would be quite nice. I'm not so much into roughing it anymore.

Dreams and schemes. The older I get the dreamier I seem to be.

Jack

You don't want your lighting load to exceed 100 watts for very long.
And you'll want to limit that to while you're traveling at a good clip.

i just trickle charge every night, cus I never go more than 5 miles at a time, probably should change that, but keeps the battery topped off and starts noticably smoother.

if you want more light to be seen only, mr 11 or mr 16 led bulbs fitted into hologen driving light fixtures..do your research and figure what you want to spend..
i have 11s  in mine think thetre smd drivers to bright to lok at directly but dont have good projection..
for you to see more(and get noticed) get a modern head lamp the has the same wattage as stock
i have a 4000 K " X bulb" many makers of "brighter, whiter" bulbs out there without adding extra load to our marginal electric system..

someone here went to hid i think..pricey and id put a bypass switch to help with starting current inrush..

I got HID, no problem yet with inrush current even with the size 10 battery.  would like it off while starting though, will do a mod shortly.

I believe I'm going to start looking into LED headlights.  They are starting to come out now.  I think HD has them as available options.

I have a KLR650 also and there is a guy on the KLR650.net forum named Idabiker who sells led headlight bulbs for our bike.  Don't know if it would fit our Savage but you could call him and ask.  I think it was $100 shipped for my led bulb.

Thanks. I'll look into it.  I have an aftermarket headlight bucket that's larger than the Savage bucket, so it may be very different.  The types I've seen for HD replace the whole bulb and reflector assembly with a single unit.
