SSM says to line up center gears together.
the pawl should be in line between the two shafts.

Yep i lined the pawl with shifter spline arm and it shifts through 2 gears.... i can change gears and rotate pawl around and get all 5 gears and neutral.... but to set it in 1 gear and line up pawl i only have use of 1 and 2 gears

yep.... they also lined the piston rings together to..... it produced gouges in the cylinder.... the original owner was very hard on the bike also.... brand new off the show room floor and they were rompin on it.... the cam chain and tensioner have already been replaced by previous owner.... the driven trans shaft was spaced wrong to may washers inside..... so no 5th gear.... now i have 5th gear.... just ordered new rings honed the cylinder a miniscule amount.... maybe .0001 of an inch.... ;D

Piston rings are known to rotate.
You finding them aligned is most likely a coinsidence.
