Title: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 03/25/12 at 14:05:23

Putting in the battery box and faux oil tank has me making some changes to the rest of the bike. The first is to chop off the frame rails from where the stock seat and upper fender would've mounted to.

Still needs cleaned up a little bit, but the rails are cut down quite a bit.

Leftovers

With some unfortunate carnage to the drive belt... Anyone think this will cause an issue with the belt? It didn't melt the whole way through:

I'm not sure if I'm going to mount the solo seat off the gas tank where it is sitting now... or if I want to get a piece of metal welded in right behind that to mount it on there. The front sits a little high, but the back looks 10x nicer being "lower"

Since the main strength of the belt is in the cords... no problem.

Great news, thanks Vers... Was hoping that this wouldn't cost me a new belt too. :)

Looks good so far.  I welded a peice of flat bar with a couple holes drilled in across the old fender horns after I cut them off.  A solid piece provides some rigidity to the whole seat mount set up, and you can set the height wherver you like.  Mine is pretty much riding the frame all the way.

The flat bar welded on from the back:

Tell me you didn't do that w/ a cutting torch ! :o

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 03/26/12 at 16:13:28

Haha... I wouldn't trust myself with a torch. Used a cutoff wheel. :)

Thanks for the pictures Smoke. Any pictures with the seat off?

I have a torch, & I can Gay Rawn Teee you,, I woulda used the cutoff grinder on that little trick.. No way is my hand steady enough or my cuts clean enough to go at that with a torch. Bummer ya boogered the belt a bit, but I dont think its hurt,,

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 03/26/12 at 17:44:16

After the mishap on the belt, I put something over it incase it happened again... Covered the tank up too so that I wasn't spraying anything on that.

Need to get another cutoff disc to finish the job with. Should look nice and clean when it's all done though. :)

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 03/26/12 at 19:28:19

When I was installin the Supertrapp I let sparks from a grinder get close to the battery vent.. Do NOT do that.. my bat tree desploded & I spent the next 3 hours with baking soda & water cleaning the bike up to keep it from rusting things from the bat tree acid splashed around..

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by Routy on 03/26/12 at 19:44:26

Ok, I was going to suggest a cutoff wheel. Seems like it would be hard to do that w/ a cutoff wheel. I never bear down that hard on them.

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 03/28/12 at 05:39:10

Justin - No battery installed in this at the moment... The battery in it's a dry cell anyways, so no worry about vent tubes. Sounds scary though!

Wow dude you've been busy..the seat looks way better. I'm not that far along with my seat. The frame horns were already cut when I got the bike, I've added some gussets that's it.

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 04/08/12 at 17:07:51

Well... Put a new cutoff wheel on and went to town today after Easter lunch with my parents. Also cleaned up the area where the belt guard was on, the airbox mounts on the side of the frame, and I ground down the little "lip" area where the gas tank and seat mount. With the lip in place, it made the top brackets of my battery box set up just a bit too high. I think with taking them off, it'll work out a lot better. Although I didn't try it today, we'll see when I get back up there later this week.

http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4740&g2_serialNumber=2

On the battery box, I am going to cut a hole in the bottom of it near the front of the box so that I can run the cables coming off the bottom of the bike in that way. It'll be easier than having to run them back the frame, up the back of the box and in over the top.

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 04/14/12 at 18:34:01

And today... She fired up and ran for the first time in..... way too long!

Got the battery box/electronics can mounted. I had cut a new hole in the bottom so that I could run all the wires from the bottom of the bike up in the can without having to go from the back, etc. I did NOT run the power cable through there, but may go back and do that. Might make it easier to mount all of that.

Connected everything, put in some fresh gas, and she started. A couple things need attention yet; front brake needs fluid and bled, it seems like maybe my carb isn't pulling gas by vacuum. I ran it on prime and ran around the block with it.

Still need to sort out brake light, turn signals, etc... But it's almost ready to ride. :)

http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4743&g2_serialNumber=2

Changed up the seat mount a little bit too. Was using a generic one that looked something like this:
http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/public/G8on2iC2Ut8_Lt4nBWKrILtApfN6UpbdGnVHwa_7he_d135UVAGBEaMzzn_Ic0h9NQHoyXHMWxIb2W5bRTl28bNgi2OwVUQLu4-nZzGqdQBZlAw7-RXFfPYASxCfOC5f4SoNeWiQeeNXN7hhIeINeYGS-gA2o0qwFDDl4toJRDkeIk7X8xlw4o8TUoHTajsGdyod8F_uZF5HgQ

I was only using the top part, since it bolted up to the gas tank area without any changes. I flattened out the mount, cut off the sides, and then drilled new holes. It drops the front of the seat by a 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch, which is a nice change. :)

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by Cavi Mike on 04/14/12 at 20:28:18

That looks much better. The gap underneath the seat has been almost eliminated. Amazing what 3/4" will do.

Right... Well that, as well as cutting off the passenger support bars that were holding it up before.

Looking Really...Really Nice Dude..   Found a rear fender yet?

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 04/15/12 at 15:07:37

Not yet... I may just grab the one from BCB and be done with it. I can ride it without for now, I did for a few months with the trailer fender I started mocking up. We'll see. I may continue that project, since I've already got it.

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 05/16/12 at 17:45:25

Wires all tucked, seat mounted, brakes bled... I need a brake light, turn signals, rear fender....

I pulled the front fender off. Any suggestions there as to good or bad? I like the look without it, but dangerous?

Looking forward to riding now that it's up and running. :)

I remember being a kid and riding my bike to school in the rain.
And getting there and having a skunk stripe down my back from all the water and road cheese flung up by the wheel.
Like 'em or not I would put them on, but that's just me.

Bike looks good...nice clean lines. Fenderless looks good, but I think I would probably still end up with putting something back on if it was me.

With the mods that you have done, I was a bit surprised to see that you hadn't taken off the badges on the tank  :-? oh well

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/17/12 at 09:39:39

A fender that stops about 2" in front of the forks maybe? Down the back of the wheel far enough to keep crap off the jug & under the tank & off the chin?

A rear mounted to the swing arm to let the fender lay close to the tire?

Leave the badges, or youll be having to tell people who manufactured the machine every day..

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 05/17/12 at 16:55:32

Hah, I remember days of riding my bike and having the same stripes... :) Fortunately I'm not that hardcore to do the same on my motorcycle. I went out 1 time in the rain and turned back after 4 blocks. My wides Ninja 250 isn't terrible because the fairings and the angle that your legs are in... You're sort of "tucked" behind everything and it keeps the water off. A cruiser, the whole front of my legs were soaked after a block. So... What happens if I get caught mid ride? Eh.... I don't know there. I guess I'd be stuck at that point or get wet.

I'm going to check the local laws to see if I need the fenders and go from there. Pretty sure I need at least the rear for inspection... And I may put the front back on depending on how it goes after riding for a little bit...

I actually LIKE the badges there. The only reason they are left. If I swap tanks some day, I'd probably not do anything to put them back on, but I kind of like them there so it's not completely debadged.

I am going to put on a rear fender of sorts... Mount it to the swingarm and have it sit right above the fender. I'm actually leaning towards the BlueCollarBobbers fender for the price... Plus - it's made for the bike and would fit better than anything I can source or fabricate myself. Unfortunately they won't sell the mounting brackets without ordering the whole kit (liability issues), so I'll have to fabricate the mounts and brackets to hold it up, but that shouldn't be terrible.

Thanks all!

My wides Ninja 250

Freudian slip? She'll whip yo skinny BUTT!

Ive been seen going down the long straights with my boots on the case & legs right by the jug.. & Ive been so wet that when I put a foot down at a lite, I felt every pulse of the spark plug. I wanted a green lite SO bad,,

WIFE... Hell, she is skinnier than me. :) Unfortunately she dumped it 2 years ago and hasn't really hopped back on it yet (partially because my bike was down all last year)...

PA law requires fenders if the bike came with them... So that will probably answer what I end up running eventually... But if I can get away with it for a little while, I probably will. :)

New tail light mounted and in place. Not 100% sold on it yet, but it's better than the cat eye that I rubbed on the tire.

I'm still thinking of going with an LED strip under the fender (once I get that) and going that route. It would solve the turn signal issue too.

For now... It keeps me legal and fits the bobber look. Thoughts?

I should of asked on my previous post but im new here....lol...where did u relocate the rectifier?  i was thinking about under the new solo seat....pls help...new here, new to riding, new to working on bikes.... :-/

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 06/15/12 at 19:09:56

I can take a picture of where it sits currently. There is a frame rail under the solo seat that I drilled holes through and have it mounted there. The rest of the stuff (all the wiring, the computer, fuses, starter solenoid, etc) are tucked into the battery box.

I may change it depending on how I mount up my BCB fender, but it works for now.

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 06/15/12 at 19:17:11

Some updates from last time (pics in another thread here somewhere for tail light and whatnot)... But I added some generic little lights. Fabricated this bracket up with some steel and a cutoff wheel:

http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4886&g2_serialNumber=2

If you look close in this picture, you can see the rectifier under the seat (the back side of it anyways). Like I said, drilled a hole through that bracket and then bolted it up. I'll take a better shot of it tomorrow for you.

BCB fender. I need to work up some supports for it, but it should look pretty nice on there. :)

did you mount the lights on the shock bolts? where did you run the wires, any pics????

Title: Re: Cutting the Frame
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 06/16/12 at 05:26:07

They are on the outside of the shock bolt. I was considering running them on the inside of it, but it's only temporary. I want to run a set of red turns and double as a brake light (like the HD Nightster).

The wires run under the solo seat and into my battery box/faux oil tank that holds the rest of the electronics.

Shots of the rectifier and top of the wiring compartment:
http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4895&g2_serialNumber=2

I also yanked the back foot reg mounts. I had simply taped them with black electrical tape last year so they were less visible, but now they're gone. And I did it all without pulling the rear wheel:
http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4901&g2_serialNumber=2

I cut a piece off an 8MM allen key that was enough to go into the bolt and enough to get a wrench around the other side. The muffler side was the hardest part, since there was not enough room to pull the bolt out with the wheel there. So I went through 4 blades on the sawzall and chopped through it. The other side came out without any problems, except that I broke the 8MM wrench. All in all though, it went pretty well and looks much nicer without them there. :)

Need to find a way to mount this up... I scoured the net to find bobbers and the way they mounted them up and I think I've found a winner, just need to source the parts.
