Title: This might be a real ignorant question
Post by Buster on 03/24/12 at 18:10:36

Finally got to start the engine for the first time and just wanted to make sure this seemed okay. Full choke, hold starter button for about 1-2 seconds and started right up. Didn't seem to be idling real fast so I just wiggled throttle a tiny bit for 30-45 seconds. Pushed choke in all the way and guessed the idle to be a little under 1,000 rpm. Noticed that throttle response felt a bit weak, but got better if I pulled the choke back out a little. Pushed choke all the way back in. Engine seemed weak, like a 3 cylinder Smart car missing on 2 cylinders during the warm-up, but after about 3 minutes engine seemed smoother and more responsive. Odometer reads 1 mile, filled with 89 octane "real" gas w/ a slosh of marvel mystery added in...and oil level is just below top line. Seem about right?

So far, so good...  don't make any fuel adjustments for cold engine behavior... let the choke(enrichment) valve do that job...
Only worry about warmed up engine performance as far as jetting goes... ;)...

Peace...

Did you think your spark plug needed oiling,I would put some Sea Foam in the gas to clean up the engine and plug.

ONE Mile? The engine is TIGHT.. dont be shocked if it knocks like its predetonating if you change gears too early. Keep the RPM varying.. Dont lug it, rpm is not the enemy , well,, within reason,, go spinnin it like youre runnin 90 in 2nd,, not good.

Didn't use a whole bottle, just about an ounce - guess I shouldn't have ever read where owners use a bit from time to time to prolong life of fuel petcock. Silly me.

Rode down to gas station and squeezed in antother $1.50, but level still not above bottom of filler tube, just in case MMO is frowned upon. Did found out how much power the bike had while I was at it - especially since I haven't even been on a bike in about 20 years. Nice!  :o

I put a capfull of Marvels in the tank every couple of tankfuls, when I think of it...
Can't hurt... (might help lube the slide?)... ... if not effective, certainly harmless...
More a tradition than a science,.. but so what... I like the name...  :-?...

been usin mmo for the last 3 years got 13k on the od..
i use about a cap full every other tank or so..
as much as you put in you may smell it burnin off..

without startin an additive war imo the benifits are:
it lubes
the petcock seals
the carb slide and float pivots
upper cylinder wall(leaded gas use to help with this)
also helps burn off any carbon deposits(un leaded gas not as much carbon as leaded)

plus gremlins cant get a good foot hold in the engine if they get past the gremlin bell!! :D
