Title: Question of idle speed...
Post by Serowbot on 03/21/12 at 10:07:30

I went on youtube and most Savages I hear seem to be idling too slow...
This one, seemed close to me...
I'm going to guess it's around 1,000rpm...
It's bit hard to hear...

What's you guess?... :-?...

That may well be dead on 1,000, but Id bump it just a hair.,wouldnt hurt to spin a small twist on the idle higher

I try to set mine as low as possible when warm but I dont think it's good for oil circulation.

Its not, Itll wreck the head & head cover where the cam spins. Ohh, but it will sound cool as it self destructs.

It's like I always have to play with my idle screw. It sounds cool lower but bike runs better when I bump it up.

Yup,.. low idle will fk'up your cam....

Cam lobes and friction surfaces will become galled, and prematurely wear out...

That's why I posted this clip,.. best to set it in this range...

What is the best way to measure the rpm?!
Just guessing?! Or how do you guys do that?

We mostly guess...

Listen to the bike in the clip on the first post,.. and it's ball park...

The idle should sound smooth and easy, not loping, and not racing...

err' on the side of too fast... too slow risks oil starvation in the head...

1100 + or - 100 is spec
set mine to the voltmeter and 1100 on the tach is the best voltage&
best sound with 3" hardkrome slash cut muff

i would love to find an easy way to verify RPM - i tiwst it up 1/8 turn in Novemebr and down in april trying to keep it around 1000 for cold weather and warm/hot weather. Sure wish there was good/cheap/ simple/idiot proof tach available.

Never touched mine - only has 210 miles on it, but mine doesn't seem to idle fast enough until engine is fully warmed up. When cold, full choke doesn't really change idle like a "fast idle" choke setting normally does on a carb engine. Didn't know if that was normal or not. Seems to be running great though, and I haven't been letting totally off the throttle just in case throttle is too low. At a stop I just open the throttle a little bit, where it sounds safer.

not the prettiest, but it is what I have duct-taped to my tank right now while I'm jetting my carb. Installation couldn't be easier: wrap the one wire around your spark plug 3-4x, push the one button to select how many times the spark plug fires per revolution, and you are done. it takes an average over a second or two, so you won't get pin-point precision, but it is good enough to get your idle within 40rpm or so.

powered by an internal battery, so you don't have to power it, but it'll crap out eventually and there isn't much you can do about that.

W/o a tach, not a useful pohl at all,.....IMO
I know that I can't vote because I don't have the foggiest, most others don't either.

Having said that, I always idle as fast as possible as to not interfere w/ gear clash when shifting 1st gear.
Idling too slow is not good for anything !

For comparison's sake, here's a clip of mine with a tach running at an idle of about 1500RPM earlier this year. I have since turned it down closer to 1000RPM but it almost sounds too slow now and I think I will find a "middle" ground to settle on.

I adhered a Koso digital tach to the top of my handlebar's brake luid reserve box on Sunday.  Works perfectly out of the box and was about $50.

I usually keep my idle around 1100-1200.
